njc110381 Posted October 23, 2010 Report Share Posted October 23, 2010 I'm having a few scope mounting issues and was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this? I got my .338 Win Mag from the shop today and cheerfully brought it home to mount the scope. The mounts that come with it are supposedly 1" rings. Well I've tried to mount my S&B in them and much to my disgust it doesn't fit! My Leupold does, which has all of a .6 (that's point six, not six) mm smaller tube! Now, the Schmidt isn't a cheap scope and has always fitted the other mounts I've put it in. There should be enough play for it to fit in surely? When I pressed the scope into the rings they scratched it and then the screws weren't long enough to bite into the bottom half of the rings! What's that about?! Just to make matters worse I've got my Hornet too and I don't have an allen key to fit the grub screws on those mounts either. I have 2.5mm and 3mm but oh no, these need 2.75mm! I'm thoroughly p***** off. I know I have a key somewhere but can I find it? Can I ****! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Posted October 24, 2010 Report Share Posted October 24, 2010 hi mate, your having some bother is the s&b 1" diameter and the lupe 25mm? that would account for the odd 0.5mm difference, as for the allen keys, get yourself a decent set of imperial as 2.75mm sounds a bit fishy, it's probably an imperial 3/32". good luck with it, might want to pick up a precision bit set, i had quite a few probs in the past with american stuff being a bit "odd" using imperial driver sizes, my browning buckmark is the same. I don't really want to sell the S&B but the range of mounts for the Ruger are limited to say the least! I can't get the S&B in the mounts on the CZ either?! In fact I wonder if grinding paste on a battered old scope would do it?! EDIT... njc110381 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2010 Well we couldn't get the mounts to centre in the chuck so had to lap them down with a home made bar and home made grinding paste! I should thank Phil on here for his efforts. I ended up sat in a folding chair in the corner of the workshop sulking while he finished them off (or should I say did the job)! It took ages! I didn't leave until gone 11pm. The scope is on now though so hopefully if this rain packs up for a bit I'll go out and set fire to some grass with my new boom stick. .338 Win Mag, no moderator - I'd say this one is going to be a little harsh on the shoulder and everything else around it! :blink: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I fired twelve rounds through it and pulled my last shot by 4" at 100 yards. Once it starts to hurt there's no hope of shooting well so Paul took over and got it set to 20mm high at 100 with three more shots. It's not a bad gun to use by any means - my first few shots were spot on. After 10+ rounds prone though things do start to feel a little delicate! The way I see it I will never fire ten rounds one after the other in real use. If I do need to fire multiple shots quickly I should think the last thing on my mind will be how much the rifle hurts. Probably more like how much those 4" teeth are going to hurt which will more than offset the recoil! I like the gun. The trigger was a pleasant surprise for a Ruger (they're well known as being rubbish in the trigger department). It's quite heavy but very clean with no creep at all.
