adam_r
Hi Everyone, Yesterday was my first time shooting clays, and now I'm hooked During my lesson the instructor noticed I was right eye dominant but I'm left handed, so I was then told to close my right eye. The problem with this is my eyesight in my left eye is terrible, to the point where I had to ask if I'd broke the clay. Now, I do have glasses but I didn't have them with me. I've tried looking through my glasses using my left eye and, to be honest, my long distance vision isn't the best even with glasses on. I'm obviously brand new to this, but hope that my situation is relatively common ?? Many thanks

My eyesight in that eye is pretty bad. My glasses are for computer use etc so probably wont be very good for distance anyway.
vampire
I think you need a second pair of general glasses ,thats £25 for the consultation please, would you like to book another
Gordon R
Many people wear glasses for reading, which are useless for shooting. Get your distance vision checked and get the appropriate glasses.
Chris Bb
I "bit the bullet" financially and had a pair of varifocal lenses fitted to Top Gun glasses. That improved my shooting no end and I could see to write the score card. A tiny piece of opaque tape on the left lens stopped any chance of the left eye taking over. HDAV
I am the reverse R/H left eye dom poor sight in right eye after 6 months of trying i was advised to shoot L/H which i do now, shooting R/H will probably be better int he long run (certainly easier to buy a R/H gun!) COACH
Very common problem that. You will probably be better off shooting from the right shoulder as your brand new to the game. It will only take a month for you to get use to it and you will shoot better within the first 100 clays if your coach is any good. Easier to find a gun that fits quite well as well. hillmouse
It is a very common problem indeed. My personal experience recently is that it is actually more common to have a left eye dominant/centre vision right handed shooter than a right handed right eye dominant client. Especially if they are a lady. If you are wearing safety specs (You ought to be) then a quick fix is a dab of lipsyl on the left lens. You can go a bit more precise with tape and magic dots as you progress. It can make a huge difference to the gun/eye dominance picture when fitting the gun. You retain most of your vision as well. I had one client who spent £3500 on a left handed gun and struggles to shoot it off his left shoulder as he is normally right handed but left eye dominant. He was very cross to find out a dab of lipsyl worth 0-05p would have sorted him out.

Try and see how you get on, and don't forget to let us know how you get on. No point in offering advice if we never get to find out the result, if it turns out to be wrong at least we know not to offer the same advice again bakerboy Terry Edited October 25, 2010 by bakerboy

Works in some cases (not mine) depends how dominant your eyes are and how unbalanced your vision, but who spends £3,500 on a gun without trying the obvious stuff? Learnign to shoot of the left shoulder isnt that hard I did it, but it takes time and effort (rather than cash) if you try the lipsyl and just see lipsyl your eye dominance doesn't swap (ruined a perfectly good pair of shooting glasses trying that one)
Swamp Beast
Ive only been shooting for a couple of years and my eyes are ### up too!- ie right handed, left eye dominant, bad right eye vision. I tried tru-hit eye dominance things you stick on the rib but eventually was told to keep both eyes open as you see the target and are mounting the gun then close my dominant left eye follow through and pull the trigger. Is the best thing that works for me so far. I seem to find im better on instinctive shots (on game) rather than watching a bird getting closer and having too much time to thing about it. Just stick with what your most comfortable with it and see how it go`s!
Alanl50
I'm left eye dominant and right handed I could not get on with glasses for shooting always in the way so I went for contact lenses, brilliant the optician set me up with a mono vision system he called it, he has my right lense set for distance and my left lense set for close up, you have to sight with your right eye, not consciously your brain does that bit It works really well, I use to use the "Easy hit bead" system that worked well as well but much prefer my contacts lenses Alan
adam_r
Thanks for all the tips guys, when I begin some sort of formal training I'll discuss this with the coach. I'm not sure where to opt for at the moment. There are a few places close to me, the Boar, fox house clay sports, wortley and high bradfield all within a 25 min drive

Emmsy
change to shoot right handed, i did. its going to be a lot easier to learn to shoot from the other shoulder than it will be to try messing around with your vision
