hi steve,worked on jeep for many years and con honestly say the patriot is terrible dont buy one ever,or you will be sorry as it will spend most of its life in the workshop,they have 4x4 capabilities but are no means on off roader,hope this helps

richie what are older jeeps cherokee and grand cherokee like ? reliable any good off road mpg cheers

A mate had a 4.7 grand cherokee, good off road great on road terrible MPG, Cherokee is good as well electrics go wrong about 100k and parts aren't cheap.

to be honest,the only jeep worth getting is the 4.0l xj.they are good off road but they do suffer with rear diff noise,mpg not very good,the 2.5 petrol xj in just gutless,and the 2.5 diesel xj suffer head problems.my advice is to save your money and buy jap,jeeps are great when they work but when they go wrong they go wrong big time and are expensive to put right the newer jeeps are full of problems,i wouldnt have one if you gave it to me lol :o

A great help mate - Thanks! The only reason I asked, is that my Freelander 2 is 3 years old next March, and I saw an advert for the Patriot, with the price starting at under £15.000

I'll leave well alone.

yes mate master tech in jeep,but have moved on now,

I have a 2001 cherokee XJ 4ltr converted to run on LPG I get 18 mpg on petrol and the same on gas at half the price so why have a rattly old diesel with some good AT tyres its as good as any Landrover on or off road and my road tax it only £180 p/y and they are cheep to buy and just do not go wrong I would not swap the one I have for anything.

you will see that I was not "abusing" the OP.

 

It was merely a 'humorous' (yes, you will need to look that word up) suggestion that to aspire to a Dodge Nitro you might be black or indeed want to be black a la the famous DJ Tim Westwood whom I understand to be a proud owner of a Dodge Nitro and a couple of Chevvy Suburbans.

Hi Steve, For what it is worth my Brother-in-law is technician for Jeep and he also says keep well away from the Patriot. He also told me to stay clear of the earlier 2.5l diesel engine Jeeps.

 

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 gas converted and it is excellent, I know its older than what you are looking at getting but I would imagine the new ones are even better, It is Extremely Comfortable and has all the gismos you could ever want. It is also very capable Off-Road apparently!! I have still to test this out in serious mud. But glided through deep sand and also no problem on getting to my permissions, Great for towing, Gets same MPG Towing as not. Only downside this MPG is not good, it is very Thirsty. I get 150 miles out of £40 of Gas and about 200miles on £70 petrol.

 

 

This Just ticks all my boxes for me, Doesn’t look 10 years old, I can use it to take the family out in comfort, Great for getting to my permissions, Load it up with garbage to take down the local tip, Tow caravan to go on Holiday, Great in the snow etc…etc … While I can afford to run it I will keep this forever. This is my second Grand Cherokee and the only reason I got rid of the other one was it was costing too much to run but this being Gas converted helps.
