urban_winter
I would like to get a shotgun for my nine year old son so that he can have a go at some clays with me. Weight is very important - he's not very strong yet so he needs as light a gun as I can find. I was assuming that I should get a .410 but I'm worried that it will be just too hard for him to hit anything with such a small calibre. I wonder whether a 20-bore semi might be a better option. I'm currently thinking either a Yildiz SPZM .410 or a Franchi 20-bore semi (because they are supposed to be the lightest available). Thoughts? U. Dekers
You will find some light 410 but I don't think it is the way to go. The 20 has been known as the boys/wifes gun for years, somewhat unjustifiably in my view, they can be very capable. So a 20 perhaps, but make sure you keep to light carts, especially if you get a light gun! What about a 12g semi, some pretty light ones and the recoil is light! Vince Green
Frankly, .410s are pathetic at clays. If he wants to shoot clays he needs to gain confidence by hitting a few. A 20 would much better and last him a lot longer.
rimfire4969
A 28 would be best to start with, trouble is they fetch silly money. I am still waiting for one for my lad to come along. I thought about a 20 semi, but i like to see a gun broken to be safe in someone young.
HDAV
I thought about a 20 semi, but i like to see a gun broken to be safe in someone young. That would be sensible Franchi O/U are as light as the semi's http://www.franchi.com/Product/index.asp?ID=737 but would need the stock cutting down less than ideal on a brandnew gun. Even worse is the fact that GMK dont import them....may be best to visit a good gunsmith and have a chat. Just looked at the webley .410 Junior and its 2.7kg more than the Franchi 20g (2.45kg) and as much as the 12g It is more about balance than actual weight What about a single 20?
