Shoot or Don't Shoot

Remember that we are only permitted to shoot woodies by way of the general license, which allows the shooting on the grounds of crop protection.

Therefore if the crop is being hit it needs protecting. Cranfield has stated the circumstances under which restraint is best made.

good advice above there, alot of PW members should read it, and learn, as I always see quotes of "unsporting" to shoot pigeons in heavy snow, yet the general license states they cannot be shot for sport, only crop protection

When the weather is as bad as it is now and the birds are struggling for a feed I restrict my shooting to the crops were the birds are damaging the crop , mainly rape at this time of the year in my parish . I leave them alone on the beet tops and the stubbles untill the weather warms up . Not much fun in shooting birds with razor thin breasts .

Harnser .

Pigeons are numerous and on the General licence....shoot within the confines of the general licence and exercise your own self control and theres no moral dilema.

I only shoot pigeons when crop protection is required so I would be tempted to shoot these birds with a clear conscience. In fact all you will probably do is move the flocks on to areas which are clear of snow and ice.

As you were :good:

up here in the lothians weve had 1-2 ft of snow so the rape is covered but sprouts are getting hammered put 1000 plus of one field to day. the person we shoot for it one of the biggest veg growers in scotland so if he says shoot them we have to shoot them or he will get somone else in to do it .as has been said b4 they will find food in any weather be it berries on hedges or greens the will find it .

we shot 120 plus and lost 10-15 on sprouts and i have to say not one of them was in poor condition after a week of heavy snow .and the birds we saw going to roost tonight had crops stuffed full !
