Kes
Gents, I have a Remington 700 VLS with floorplate action. It isn't the best rifle for foxing and getting a second is not likely to be popular with the FLO. So I can upgrade or swap. The 700 (and mine particularly) is a good accurate rifle, solid but also in need of some improvement. I dislike the foorplate mechanism and would prefer a magazine. The Barrels is the biggest problem, its just too heavy for anything but targets. The stock is a flat beavertail forend (Laminated) but perhaps a thumbhole would be better for foxing? Does anyone know of a good place to go to get advice and costs for the staged improvement of the rifle - magazine first, trigger second, barrel third, stock last. I'd like a fluted barrel but would be keen to hear ideas from those who have the experience to guide a relative beginner. Thanks in advance. Kes. seeker
a) where are you? ... there's probably a custom gunsmith just down the road ... B) have a google for something like "rem 700 custom parts" ... c) before you do anthing write your budget for the gun in indelible ink somewhere prominent ... al4x
swap it, you won't loose the barrel weight, Personally though the floorplate is a bit of a nuisance its ideal in that you don't have a magazine sticking out which is the big plus point. Personally I have a 700 sps with the standard barrel and that is spot on with being a light gun. It does come in a DM version which stands for detachable mag so there is an option and it is a lot cheaper to replace the gun than buy a conversion kit for your existing one. Dunkield
You could buy a decent rifle for the cost of buying all the parts to do yours up, I would chop it in. I wouldn't have a floorplate rifle, IMO they are a pain in the backside - not all mags protrude, in fact most 3 shots mags don't.
CharlieT
I agree with everyone else. Swap it. You are going to end up spending a fortune on parts, just go out and part X it for something, perhaps secon hand, that fits the bill. I'll start the argument rolling...................swap it for a Tikka T3.

Kes
Thanks to you all for the reponses so far. I bought the rifle second hand after some deliberation. I purchased the rifle, a deben 4-16*56 scope and mounts, T38 mod, rifle sling, full competition reloading kit (everything possible inc competition seating die) 90 rounds of ammo 2 bullet carriers and 1000 primers, packet of bullets and almost 2 full kilos of v133 and v140. I paid less than £600 for all of this and feel I have to make the most of a good deal. At the time a T3 tactical (the preferred new one) was about the same price, just for the rifle. I tried one and the stock was a bit takky I thought (sorry to those who do not agree). If I swap, I think I'd go for a variation to .243 (which my permission is cleared for) and it would be a sako so we are talking at maybe £1700 for a sako and a really good scope (schmidt and bender). If I say £1000 budget to improve the existing rifle, would that not get me a good new barrel , magazine conversion and a reasonable stock? If not, what are we talking to do all this? I live in Cheshire so should be close to some custon builders. Any thoughts on the trade in value for my existing kit? What rifle/spec/scope/ mod would you chaps go for, (if I do start making up a .243 kit) and would you consider night vision ? Thanks again.
