woodyfirst
Right, I'm looking to the more experienced ferreters amongst you for guidance! A farmer has asked me to help him out with a rat problem! Apparently he's 'over-run' with rats. He asked me to have a go with the ferrets, but I'm a bit wary, as my ferrets havent been innocullated against anything. Personally, I'd rather take the dogs down there. Any thoughts? jeff
Unless your dogs are ok with the ferrets and vice versa you are as well to smoke them out with a chainsaw and let the dogs do the rest. Its very easy for a terrier to nail a ferret in the excitetment if he isnt 100% steady with the ferrets. Also have you used the ferrets on rats before if not and it is as over-run as the farmer says it probably isn't the best place to start them. rushy lad
I have used ferrets to rats once and that was once too many! She got into a battle with a doe rat protecting her young, and whilst she locked horns with it ,another came in from the side and made a real mess, She was dead next morning, I value them too highly to be used on rats, and tend to dig them with my terriers or let them work them freely, Still take a good haul every year doing it this way. Thats my opinion and I know a lot still use their ferrets to rats..... Rushy.
Ferret Master
Hi, Personally I wouldn't use my Ferrets on Rats. Smoke 'em out or pour a bucket of water down their hole. (That worked yesterday) FM

woodyfirst
You've all just backed up my thoughts exactly! I think i'll smoke them out, and let the terriers have a bash! (i'll arm myself with a big stick too  ) Whats the best method of doing this? Block some holes? Thanks for the advice so far... Natures_son
Blocking holes is the last thing you want to do. Get your chainsaw motor strimmer etc and put the tube down the one of the holes. Just let it tick over until the first rat bolts then really rev it. You will kill alot more rats when their still underground by smoking them though. I use ferrets on rats and have never had any problems. Besides which if one does die its only a fiver for another one.
