Eclipse 70
Might sound a stupid question. I currently have a .22 rimfire fitted with a Sak moderator. If I change to a .17 calibre rifle, will I need to change the moderator as well? Cheers. Eclipse.

sussex lad
no. But they must have the same thread cut onto the barrel!! usually 1/2"UNF And i take it you mean the .17hmr!! Don,t go mixing rimfire and center fire sound mods up !!!

badsworth
Don,t go mixing rimfire and center fire sound mods up !!! Errr....Why? So long as they have the correct thread. I realise that a rimfire mod is unlikely to have much effect on a centrefire - but what harm could it do? B

B If i remember right, The pressures involved are much much greater and could blow a rim-fire mod apart!!! Also a rimfire can deposit a lot of unburnt powder inside of a moderator which in theory could be ignited by a center fire round resulting in a big bang

B BANG! ............Thats what.....That is if you intend to use 1 Mod on 2 different guns (Rim & CTR Fire) Unburnt powder from the Rimfire will build up in the Moderator ..........When the forces created by Centre Fire are introduced then the probabilty of a explosion are likely . Dunkield
Athough they are same pitch/type centrefire barrels are threaded longer than rimfires, I am not sure if that applies to HMR's (so don't quote me without checking first) but my .223 thread is definitely longer than my .22 RF. Axe
The thread lengths on both my Barrels i.e. .22LR & .17HMR are the same length.

Dunkield
hmmm think about it, moderators come with standard threads so barrels must also to match up. I take you point that not all threads are the same, but all T8's, for instance, would be the same.

Frank
I agree, if you use a rimfire mod on a centerfire, then expect a 'BOOM'!!!!!!! Its a very fine line from what ive been told by a rifle smith, when a T4 mod gets used on a .223 apparently. A T8 is ment to be safer, only found this out the other day , so those of you who think of using T4s on their .223s, watch out and becarefull . Go for a T8 instead, its better to be safe then sorry.
