JR1960
Right, before we start, all those holier than though types who want to give me a lecture on being irresponsible etc etc please DON'T BOTHER. Plain yes or no's or where pertinent a small description will suffice nicely. If I didn't think it was secure i wouldn't be suggesting it. So, firstly does anyone have any experience of the 'screw to the wall brackets with a lock through the trigger guard" type gun locks with regards shotguns? The reason I ask is i have an old C19 Ward underlever hammer gun which i've had since God was a boy. I lost the hinge pin out of it donkeys years ago but its still on my ticket. I don't really want to have it deactivated (if i was honest it would feel like defiling an old friend, sentimental **** that i am). But we live in and old cottage and it would look great over the fireplace. Like i said, the hinge pin has been lost and i would take the firing pins out and it would be very securely mounted, but its still a legal firearm and it would be on show. So, what do the team think, should i ask my local FO and see what he says or am i wasting my time?
Katash
I'd say no (but with no experience) .... I was told by a FEO that a cable type lock is fine if only 1 shotgun is to be kept in the property and even then it still MUST be kept out of sight. JR1960
Yeah, thanks for that. I'm afraid i think you're going to be right. I suspect the very fact that its on show will be a no-no. Just to clarify, the type of mount i mean is a two part mount, one part has a barrel "ring" that screws into, in this case the massive oak beam over the fireplace, and the second part screws in as well and has a locking plate that goes through the trigger guard and locks in place. HDAV
you would have to clear it with FEO gun clamps arent like the RFD type display mounts and RFD's are much more secure buildings in general, instead of putting it on the wall get a hinge pin made and shoot it? cowboy1403
on ticket gun on display is going to be a no no.if your not going to shoot it just get it deactivated and give it pride of place over the fireplace.atleast you will be able just to take it down to clean and show the grandkids(not saying you are old)
silpig5
i asked about that style of clamp for my cubord along while ago . even in the cubord paddy said no . they new one there is three times as bad as denison on a bad day im told , if you ask a question ,about guns out of cabinets you might gett a fine tooth comb visit . sorrydude , its a deactivation cert . x
Oxon88
I would say if your not ever going to shoot it again then why not get it deactivated? Give it the retirement it deserves, have the enjoyment of admiring it atop your mantelpiece, reminiscing fond memories of bygone outings. Zapp
Yep, I agree with the sentiments already expressed. If it isnt going to be fired again, far better (IMHO) that it gets a sympathetic deactivation and pride of place over the mantle, than languishing in a cabinet. Having said this, are you absolutely sure it is not worth replacing the hinge pin etc? Is it still in proof?
Sprackles
The law is strange in this respect. I have a 10 bore on ticket, in proof, excellent condition and I have pulled some good shots off with it but......it has 2 5/8" chambers. I can legally take it off ticket as it is an obsolete calibre and hang it on my wall if I so wished. I can even sell it to someone without a SGC. JR1960
Thanks guys, pretty much confirmed my thoughts, just thought i'd ask. Looks like it'll have to be chopped or stay in the cabinet. Adi - Who's the new guy?? Don't think i've had the pleasure. Matt's got to apply for his new cert this week, we're struggling to find anyone who'll countersign his application as we've not been back long and all our old 'friends' won't speak to me and him after we left herself. The quack won't do it as he doesn't know him. Edited January 7, 2011 by JR1960
