steve0146
Just bought a DIY day from someone advertising on various forums. He advertisied there were around 1000 pigeons on his field and some big bags were being had from near by. I paid the money and was taken to the field. Had to listen for 30 mins to the bloke talking about what a legend he was in the shooting world and the big bags he shoots. Anyway, after setting up, I waited for 3 hours and never saw a bird. A small flock flew over and I shot two from it. Another 2 hours passed and I had the odd shot. Total bag 6 for 6 hours shooting. I know they are wild birds but I could have shot 6 around my own wood! I have never paid for a day before and after this doubt I will again. It was not that birds were ignoring decoys etc, there were none there. Anyone else buy days and have this experience! artschool
how much did you pay?
Bleeh
Bit of a shame, I've never been but I've heard good things about guides who will keep setting up new Hides and move you about in attemps to get good days out, but sometimes you get a lazy sod who plonks in you a field, and picks you up £50 - £100 better off. TJ91
Pigeons are getting few and far between on my permissions at the moment, if it carrys on this way i may buy a DIY day witha well known guide who is on this forum. I have heard many good reports and understand he will keep moving the shooter to different locations if the birds dont show in the first place its a shame to hear reports like this...but name and shame, let others learn from your mistake of going with this 'legend'
Schern
Luck has a lot to do with it too. Not really a case of shaming the person, they can't guarantee that wild birds will turn up. Plenty of people pay to fish carp lakes with big fish in but it doesn't guarantee they're going to catch one.

I agree... same with stalking... if you go out expecting to shoot a deer on every trip you will be sorely disappointed!!

lineshooter
The thing is the way it`s sold, they go on and on about thousands of birds just to get you hooked then thats bad, as we all know, it may not happen on your day, when I hear this or someone bragging about there abilities I am always dubious of there motives. Any honest guide as mentioned will do his best to get you on the birds but may also mention that say over the last few days numbers have been down, that way you know what to expect. Funding our hobby is hard enough without lining someone elses pocket.
silverhawk
It just depends on the day.I went on one of my permissions and shot 3pigeons week later took a trip back up there and shot over 70 nothings garanteed.
scolopax
I would be cautious about taking a day pigeon shooting at this time of year unless on one of those rare hotspots that sometimes occur, an unharvested field, topped game cover etc. A normal January rape or stubble field can be very very hard. I concur . Rape shooting is not the be all and end all of pigeon shooting . It can be a right pig . Harnser .
steve0146
It was 50 quid and over rape. There just was no birds in area. All I got was a text at the end of the day that he could not pick me up as he had to go out. So I walked back across the fields with all the gear! Don't really want to name and shame but would only ever go again after a personal recommendation from someone. I didn't buy it from this forum by the way!
