Strange Noise in the Dark

Whilst out one evening the middle of last week sorting some rats out with the NV set up in a corner of a game crop and having decided at 9.30pm it was time to head back home i went to check on the results of an hour and a half's work of sitting quietly in the dark having shot around ten and whilst having a look around with the torch at the results around 15m from where i was sat i heard a noise behind me and in very close proximity that shall we say "surprised" me ... what with me thinking i was all alone out there ... it sounded like what i can only describe or try to explain as a very low "grrrrrufffff" come "snort", mentioned it to the guys on the shoot this weekend to become the brunt of some ribbing to say the least so thought i would ask on here as well

any ideas ? Mr Badger seems to be the top of the list so far.

as said probably a badger - though hedgehogs also make similar sounds though not as deep - i was lying under a chainlink fence trying to get a decent shot at a fox one night, when i had this almighty snuffling and growling in my face - scared the hell out of me, i scrabbled back and flicked on my headtorch to find an angry looking hedgehog, annoyed at having been disturbed!

Could have been a Hedgehog, I remember on a fishing camping trip I woke up in the wee hours to

hear snuffles and snorts outside the tent, I poked my head outside with the maglite ready to lay

into a wild Boar and it turned out to be a Hedgehog which promptly turned into a ball of spikes.
