woodcock11
Not sure if this is the right box but no doubt Mods will correct me if not. We had the local hunt in yesterday [no ban here!] and they rose three foxes all of which went to ground. In spite of best efforts, there was no success, so we still have those three plus godness how many others on the ground. At least it will give plenty of business for our lamping team - it is good though to see how the Shoot & the Hunt can work together Anyone else out there work with a shoot and the local hunt? Scully
We sometimes use a couple of hounds from one of the local Lakes packs to flush foxes to guns, but that's about as close as I get to hunting with hounds. The hounds are impressive to watch,I must admit....clearing dry-stone walls from a standing start! woodcock11
No terrier men in your area then? Yes we have and they are normally red hot - they were out digging with lamps until about 9.00 pm and had to admit defeat - they were gutted! worthy130
I myself cannot stand the hunt, i personaly think its a cruel sport as even still alot of hunts dont have shooters, or have people WITH guns but in cases (just incase the police turn up) I think my hatred comes from being a boy who's grandad was a supporter and took me round following them, i have seen countless foxes ripped to shreds and the noises they make still haunt me even now. At new year i asked a huntsman if he would mind if i went out with my gun while he put the dogs in, the reponse was less than welcoming. But i went out anyway (i have written consent for land) and who do you think had the most foxes??? me 3 hunt
al4x
amazing worthy that you got close enough to the kill point to hear anything as I know even on horseback most followers are usually miles behind the pack
worthy130
amazing worthy that you got close enough to the kill point to hear anything as I know even on horseback most followers are usually miles behind the pack it all depends on weather you know where they will flush like my grandad did, if you know the local land you know where they head mate. thats how i managed to get infront of the flushed ones i got at new year. Sorry but what a load of tripe, you obviously know very little about hunting and have little experience of it. Hunts do not need "shooters" as you call them. The terrier man will have a 410 in his truck not on display. I presume you "followed" the hunt on foot. You must have done well to see countless foxes at the kill. A hound will kill a fox instantly as a terrier will kill a rat, being ripped to shreds and making noises is rubbish. What do you mean "put dogs in" they are called hounds. just sounds like an anti to me The only thing being cruel is a fox killing lambs or poultery for fun. I'm so sorry i thought that hounds WERE dogs, maybe oh masterfull hunter you can correct me on this!! and also inform me as to how long YOU have been riding ahead of the hunt for?? Its hilarious that the term ANTI is used on here for anyone who doesn't agree with something. Also i'm pretty sure that the dogs (SORRY HOUNDS) arn't allowed to make the kill now and doesn't that include terriers?? so what use is a .410 in the back of the truck?? Hezbear
I like to have the odd day out with the hounds, used my terriers the odd time pre-ban as I know a few terrier men from the local hunts edited to say that Worthy you can still use a terrier to ground for the protection of gamebirds but the terrier must either bolt the fox or bottle it up so you can dig down and use a gun to kill the fox, so the .410 in the back is for the end of the dig Edited February 13, 2011 by Hezbear

We always try to have a few days with the Blencathra each year and have done for the last 20 years. The sight and sounds of a pack of hounds in full cry in the fells is awesome. Gave up trying to keep up with Todhunter years ago (no southerner can)try to get as high as I can for good vantage point. Evenings are excellant as well with old peculiar, snecklifter and taty pot. Going in a few weeks cant wait.
