Schern
Just done a 2:01 breath in. Does it count as cheating if you take a few deep breaths first? :look: 35 seconds breath out. That's much harder.

Swamp Beast
can do 2 min 07- when i was in the marines a guy called `boaby the bullet` from glasgow could do over 3 minutes- was pretty impressive.
The Duncan
I swim a lot, so can still hold my breath fairly well, I can swim a length underwater, which is obviously using oxygen more than if I was to just sit here and try. My daughter appears to be a anaerobic organism, or she has some strange physical defect that allows her to breath out of her bumhole. That'll explain the bubbles in the pool About 1 min 30. About 35m underwater swimming. If I ever manage 2 lengths underwater I'll be telling everyone! welsh1
Years ago when swimming competitively in the army,i could easily do 2 lengths of a 25m pool under water, but age and a lung infection a couple of years ago have taken their toll,i managed 1min 30secs just now,but i have just eaten a huge helping of pasta and meatballs :o When we are on holiday,we have competitions as to who can hold their breath through the tunnels, and there are some long ones in europe,my 18-16 year olds have never managed to beat me
XD2
If you take some deep long breaths before holding it (3 or 4) you can greatly increase the time you can hold your breath for. I haven't timed myself though.
throbbingfinger
XD2, Ive heard that. It's something to do with expelling co2 or nitrogen from your body. I had a conversation with a mate of mine who's in the Royal Marines about free diving and he explained to me how you can hold your breath for a long time. It was about 3.30am and was quite hammered and I can't remember anymore of what he said about it. I just timed myself, 31 year old smoker. 1m 30.2 seconds. I now feel dizzy and my arms have gone all tingly...
Schern
The deep breaths before holding your breath is more to load your blood with oxygen I think rather than expel anything else. I think the free divers etc use oxygen tanks before their WR attempts.

Yeah it is a method used for diving, I believe it does have a draw back in that some people pass out because their body thinks it has more oxygen than it actually takes in (so they think they can hold it longer). Which does lead to dizziness. But it is definitely a method that helps.
throbbingfinger
Oh I see, could it be to raise your blood oxygen levels by using that method, thus reduces levels of co2/n2 in your blood stream?
Schern
Oh I see, could it be to raise your blood oxygen levels by using that method, thus reduces levels of co2/n2 in your blood stream? A quick wikipedia search on freediving suggests most of what I thought was ******** so ignore me. You were right with what you said about it decreasing CO2. Wikipedia entry: "Before diving, performance-oriented freedivers hyperventilate to a certain degree, resulting in a lower level of CO2 in their lungs and bloodstream.[3] This postpones the start of stimulation to the breathing centre of the brain, and thus delays the warning signals of running out of air. As the oxygen level of the blood is not increased by hyperventilation, this is very dangerous and may contribute to shallow water blackout and deep water blackout.[2][4]"
throbbingfinger
Ahhh, then the guys that take on pure O2 must do that then to fill their system up to prevent the blackouts. I vaguely remember my mate saying he could dive for about three minutes.
Conygree
Just got to 1min 30 sec but stopped, got to 2 min 30 yrs ago. To try and make it easy it's the CO2 that builds up in our lungs that makes us breath out, so by hypa venting we remove all the CO2, so with no CO2 to trigger breathing it's possible to black out due to lack of oyygen. Maybe of interest, often patients when ventilated a dead spacer say 100ml was put in to increase their CO2 to make them breath. Yrs ago a surgical patient was having breathing problems, the nurse increased the oxygen but the patients breathing was still low (the higher O2 reduced the C02). Later a dead spacer was fitted to build up the CO2 making the patient breath more. Edited February 11, 2011 by Conygree
pavman
right i have been trying a lot harder and can now make 50 seconds....... mental seems you can up your time fairly quickly to hold it for 2 mins must be very hard anyone got ther yet? Ferret Master
Interesting how the smokers seem to be carding higher times. I managed 1 minute 32 seconds with a VERY full stomach and I'm quite asthmatic. Although do play quite a bit of rugby and go to the gym which I am sure helps. My lung capacity is quite small though! Schern
right i have been trying a lot harder and can now make 50 seconds....... mental seems you can up your time fairly quickly to hold it for 2 mins must be very hard anyone got ther yet? I managed a 2:01 the first time and then my wife didn't believe me so I put in a witnessed 2:05 to prove my point. I listened to music to pass the time. Seems easier if you have something else to concentrate on. Could prob have gone a bit longer but I was starting to get quite uncomfortable!
