Not at the moment. They could put extra taxes on non-organic fertilizers or subsidies for organic growers, They won't spend any money on the latter so if they did anything it would be the former, which would increase the cost of the majority of our food. I would like to see more organic food available but it will probably be the market and not govenment that decides.

I have worked in the food/agriculture industries for nigh on 25 years. Every year I have been told that organic is the next big thing, and it aint happened yet. If anything we are heading for more intensive farming and GM - vital if we are to feed the world. 2nd and 3rd world country diets are beoming more sophisticated and demand is exponential. Organic food is a marketing fad designed to lure in the middle class shopper and get them to pay more for a less efficient product with no real benefits. If that's what you want, then fine, and good luck to the farmer /retailer that makes a buck out of it. But should it be subsidised by the taxpayer...No!

PS if you think that the Soil Association is dedicated to serving the health of the nation...take a look at their accounts and the salary of their top execs...

Good post Diceman.

Food production in the quantities to feed all the world is a big problem now and natural disasters don't help, nor drought or flood. We need methods that increase food production yields rather than daintily tended carrots etc mumbled to with sweet nothings to be sold to the minority.

The other option is intensive and drastic population reductions by birth control and death control - sorry but it has to be said. 80 yrs ago there were 2 billion on the planet and now there are 6 billion +

If you want organic then grow your own as I do and stop paving over your gardens etc. Helps keep obesity at bay too does a bit of exercise (he says lolled in front of the computer  )

to the ops original question definatly no, the gov should be as small and do as few things as possable! some things the gov has to do (defence, police etc...) but most things can be done cheaper and better if they arnt involved. since we are on agriculture take the subsidy system, out of the tax we pay to gov, some gets spent of admin here, then europe(where some of it is sent to other countries cause we are a major contributer), then more of it is spent on admin here before being sent out to farmers. wouldnt it be better value for money just to pay a little more for food in the shop?

no dont need to promote organic farming, need to stop GM On the contrary, GM is the main thing that will get us out of this mess!and farmers putting roids in animals already banned for well over 20 years and poison on crops that cause cancer in humans. could you link to some real scientific evidence of this? (ie not a daily mail article!) There will be a major world wide food crisis soon, see GM comment above! the government would be best to encourage people to breed less, better to start with the catholic church before the government! not rape the land for more food. how exactly are we "raping" the land?
