Starting reloading - cost check

Recommended Posts

i`m not disagreeing with you on that, its more comfortable with higher payloads, it keeps the pressure up. it is best when used for 30g and 32g loads. i`ve seen some loads for 36-40 grams with this stuff.

thats because A1 is for magnum loads, it burns slower, try it on light loads and you will see unburnt powder in your barrels.

A1 isnt for magnum loads,

32g isnt a magnum load,

34g isnt a magnum load,

36g isnt a magnum load,

38g isnt a magnum load,

40g isnt a magnum load,

42g isnt a magnum load, it is called a mini mag though.

A0 is for the latter loads, but there are better powders, NS tecna is an example of a better powder.

Tested? Can you identify the batch or powder lot? I've tested some of these 'proven' recipes and they are way out! Mind you don't blow yerself up!

In that case the whole basis for reloading is flawed and none of us should have access to anything.

Or maybe you're just being awkward because it hasn't stopped you quoting said recipes yourself :hmm:

hi fc this may be a daft question but what is a lead crusher!? :good:

A lead crusher gun (mine is proofed to 1200kg) is a mounted barrel and sturdy breech that shows chamber-pressure. It has a 'yoke' and piston fitted one inch from the breech face. A loaded cartridge is placed in a sleeve and drilled one inch above the head. The shell is removed from the sleeve and loaded into the gun. The hole is there to allow the gases to act directly on a piston. A solid lead cylinder or 'crusher' is placed on top of the piston and the 'anvil' is screwed down to secure it. When the gun is fired, the gas exerts pressure on the piston and it crushes the lead cylinder. The cylinder, which started its life at exactly half an inch, has now been shortened by the force. The cylinder is now measured with a micrometer to measure its new length. This length is looked up in a printed table and alongside each value is the CHAMBER-PRESSURE, in TONS PER SQUARE INCH for that cartridge.

This gun, used with a reliable chronograph, is ideal to evaluate your homeloads. And at least ten cartridges each time! Relying on printed 'recipes' (I hate that word) is not enough. Powder lots vary; example, in my TRADE Alliant data, there is a powder called 'RED DOT'. In a 500g tub, (for homeloaders) it is fairly idiot-proof. BUT, would you know the difference in doses for Red Dot 15, Red Dot 20, Red Dot 50, 60 or 80? All of these look the same. The first recommends 17 grains, but for the other variants, the doses are 21, 20, 22, 22, 22 for the same weight of shot. Imagine a novice loader, increasing the charge because he can't get the 'proven' velocity and doing this WITHOUT checking chamber pressure.

Manufacturers doses are suggested starting points and not gospel.

....today, a complete stranger handed me a heavy bag of bits; he had discovered them during a house clearance. He would not accept anything in return.

Contents?

Two unopened 1lb tins of Nobel 80 powder, 500 3/8" Kleena fibre wads, 500 1/11" card wads and a container of No. 5 lead shot. NICE!
