Maize cover crop

Recommended Posts

Had an enjoyable afternoon,s decoying on mown maize cover crop yesterday.

I was driving past the local shoot & noticed loads of woodies getting stuck in, so I phoned the gamekeeper to ask if I could do some shooting.

He said he,d noticed a few about & was only to pleased. He didn,t have much on so he joined me.

We drove down to the area & put a good 300 up. We found a good spot for the hide in a hedge, then set up the decoys in a horseshoe pattern.

It was slow to kick off, then they soon started coming back in, we shot in turns

but it was noticeable that most of the birds weren't fully commiting to the pattern. So we tweeked the decoys around & set up the rotary, this made a difference straight away. They were coming in 5,s & 6,s some great right & lefts were had by both of us.

There were alot of ferals about aswell & the gamekeeper wanted rid of them cause they are pain around the stables & barns on the estate.

We ended the day with 47 woodies & 16 ferals, not bad considering I was supposed to be visiting relatives that day. Only problem is the Mrs isn,t talking to me now. Oh well!
