your advise please, i dont whana pay meggar bucks for top range binoculars, i just want a reasonable pair that would do me for spotting pigeon in trees etc say 400 yrds or more. i have been looking at some on flea bay £19.99 : Pentacon Bird Watcher 10x50 binoculars

Top-quality Bk-7 optics and solid, reliable mechanics make this Pentacon Bird Watcher binocular from Praktica a stunning bargain - but we have limited quantities and they won't last! At the time of listing, the Argos price of this binocular is £39.99 inc delivery.

info as below

These binos are great for bird and wildlife watching and general use.

As the name suggests, the Bird Watcher is an ideal binocular for wild-life and bird watching and is a good all-round general use binocular - all prisms are super clear Bk-7 glass with all glass surfaces fully anti-reflection coated. The rugged rubber-armoured cast-alloy metal body has a comfortable high-quality feel and features a tripod-fitting bush

Supplied with soft padded carry case, neck strap, and dust caps.

10 year manufacturer's warranty included!

Specification:

Fully-coated Bk-7 optics.

Magnification: x10

Rubber-armoured finish.

Size (H)19, (W)6.5, (D)18.5cm.

Weight 850g.

Field of view: 99m at 1000m

This is a great rubber-armoured bino,

would these do me as i dont understand the specs, if they are no good, what specs should i look for?

In advance thanks for your help

You can't buy binoculars off the internet without having a look through a pair. You can always be cheeky and go into a gun/camera shop have a good look and then buy online!

This is once case where you really do get what you pay for. I have wasted a lot of money over the years buying a number of pairs in the £10-50 bracket and was never impressed.

Decided I would shell out a couple of hundred quid on a decent pair. Went to local RFD and looked through some Leupold, Steiner, Hawke etc. The Minox for £200 were as good as the £400/500 Leupold and Steiner. Not quite as good as Swaro, Zeiss but they don't need upgrading for a very long time.

I am highly impressed. The step up from even the better quality Hawke optics was staggering. Don't go higher than 10X mag for hand held as the image will shake. If you expect to carry them then 7 or 8 X 42 is common. The bigger lenses weigh more, but gather more light. Look for waterproof, rubber armour and nitrogen filled.

Don't waste your money on cheap ones

The guy has said he's looking at bins for £20 and £40, and said he doesn't want to spend a fortune. So he's told they're all rubbish if he doesn't get a second mortgage on a pair!

I started a thread a couple of years back called "gun snobs"..... I'll let you figure out my thoughts where this thread is going.

Mate, like you I wanted a pair of bins to do exactly what you want them for. I bought a pair from 7dayshop for £19.99 delivered and I have to say, of all the equipment I've spent my hard earned on, it has to be one of the best purchses I've made since I started this excellent sport.

Buy a pair of these and try them out, you won't be disappointed. If you are you haven't broken the bank.

After all that speech they haven't got the ones I bought, but here's the site, do a search on the forum for 7dayshop and you'll get some feedback and probably find the link to the ones I have bought and see what others thought too.

I'm with Cos, I bought some of these from 7 day shop. they have put the price up in the last few weeks  but they were 19.99 delivered.

nice and clear, waterproof and plenty good enough for scanning for pigeons. At that price im not worried about them rattling around the cab of my truck or getting trod on in a hide :good:

I am only giving my view.

As it happens I took advice from this thread:

http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/134380-7dayshop-binos-back-in-stock/page__p__1150702__hl__7dayshop__fromsearch__1#entry1150702

and bought a pair of these:

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_8&products_id=107160&source=webgains&siteid=73669

You are quite correct - they do make things look bigger! They are OK and possibly the best pair of budget bins I have [keep these in the car] but once you have looked through a decent pair you'll realise what a difference saving the money makes.

It's scary but I will have spent far more than the £200 I paid for the set of [what I call good] ones. I have now found them for £150

Yes, you started that thread and appeared to be a bell-end then.

Glad to see some things don't change.
