ab1964
I’ve been thinking about subscribing to the NPPC for a while now – and finally did join a few weeks ago. As pigeon shooting is new to me I asked John Shooter for help in getting set-up and to introduce me to pigeon field craft. This past Friday we met at one of the NPPC permissions near my home and John happily introduced me to the required equipment (Seats, Poles, Netting, Decoys, etc, etc) and how to set up a blind and a suggested decoy pattern. Most of it is really a no brainer, and can be read and learned about on this forum and other resources – but there is no substitute to seeing it done first hand for the first time. After the decoys and blind was set-up, after many tips and advice, John departed and I had a go at sitting in the blind and waiting for the first Woody. It took about 30 minutes before the first pigeon showed up – missing him on the first shot, but downed him with the second. A brisk wind was blowing and few more came in – but they proved quicker and more agile than my shooting ability. Also, while sitting in the blind a Roe Doe made herself visible, many a brace of pheasants wondered by, and a mallard pair flew within range. Taking a shot at the ducks was very tempting, but I did not, as I don't know duck seasons and rules of duck shooting for the NPPC situation I was in. Shooting at pigeons is fun stuff all by itself As quickly as the wind was blowing it died down just as quick and all movement stopped. Planes headed to Leeds-Bradford Airport were the only things in the air. John returned a short time later and we packed up. It was a good first day out having been instructed on hides, decoy patterns and equipment. Making it even more worth while was getting a few shots off and taking at least one pigeon home. So far I’m well pleased with the NPPC scheme. http://nppc.co.uk/ Edited March 13, 2011 by ab1964

The man didn't know the season so he didn't take the shot - what's the problem ?
Sharpshooter.123
He didn't take a shot as he didn't no the seasons or rules! No problem with that!
coptleigh
Problem is, if he don't know the seasons!!, use of lead on wildfowl etc!! what else might he not know!! if you are going out shooting, best to be aware of what you can do and what you cannot, IGNORANCE is not an excuse or a defence!!! Simple as that!!

coptleigh
All I was stating is, that you should be aware, before being let out with a loaded weapon, not knowing what you can do or not, is not an excuse,I hope he is totally aware, now, but are you advocating that its OK to go out shooting, then learn the basics as you go, if thats the case, why not pot a badger or two, then learn that they are protected, or anything else for that mind!!! Towngun
John Shooter is a good man and NPCC is an excellent idea. It too far for me to travel but it deserves to be supported.

Wow!!! has it been a year since my first pigeon outing? And double Wow!!! that my year old entry has caused a stir. What I have to say about that is Country Boy hit the nail on the head - I was hypothetically speaking about my day out and what I saw. I was 100% percent sure pigeons were fair game and kept it to that. Ignorance would have been to shoot those ducks, the Roe Doe, Pheasants, and whatever else happened to move. My shooting has not improved much – but my knowledge has. Hopefully that will make you less worried whilst I’m in the field.
