  1. After shooting the hare there was instant regret as they are not that plentiful - though this year I've been seeing more hares than I've seen around here for sometime. Not to mention me wife was none too pleased - and a member of my landlords family politely asked I refrain shooting them in the future. All that said - hares are off the future shooting menu. It was still good sport, shooting, and making contact with the zigzagging beast.
  2. This Past Friday I worked a half day and planned to do a few hours pigeon & crow shooting on my landlord’s farm. Walking out to where I was to set-up the hide and decoys – a hare jumped out of the grass and ran for it. Amazingly, as he zigged and zagged, my shot made contact. As I walked toward the hare to put him in the bag, a Roe Buck jumped out of a nearby hedge and ran toward a small wood at the bottom of the farm. Over the wall and into the wood he went. As it was very warm and flies started to collect on the Hare - I walked the two miles back to the house to gut and chill the hare. After taking care of the hare, I thought the Buck was probably still in the wood. It's not a very big wood, a couple acres surrounded by open fields. My guess was he'll be there till dark before moving out. A game cam I set up in the wood a few months ago caught a doe and buck bedding down in there during the day. Grabbing my rifle I stalked down to the wood, the wind was perfectly in my face - and I quietly made it to the edge of the wood. And there he was, browsing, about fifty yards away. Now I just had to wait for a safe shot. There is lots of cover in the wood and it was difficult to see what was beyond the buck. He finally walked into a small "tunnel" of openness where between me, the deer, and high ground beyond, there was a clear view. The shot rang out and his hind legs gave a good kick. Down he went. The bullet entry was little more left of the shoulder than I wanted, but as the deer was not 100% broadside to me, it traveled at an angle through the deer - piercing shredding its heart. There was divine intervention with that shot. It was a good day - though the pigeons or crows were safe.
  3. My decoy pattern consists of 20 Flocked pigeon decoys in an S shape. Two or three of the pigeon decoys I cover with an old black sock. When the birds are out - this pulls in crows, jackdaws, and pigeons quite well.

    Orkney Islands

Been to the Orkneys twice with the wife and our two boys - we love the place. First visit was to the main island, second visit was to Sanday. Below are some links to what's there to do. I've done them all and was not disappointed. Just walking along the coast is wonderful with lots of wild life to behold. Many Seals and perhaps a glimpse of an otter or Killer whale may be had. the water is killer blue, Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/skarabrae/ http://www.tomboftheeagles.co.uk/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/brodgar/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/vikingorkney/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/tombs/quoyness/index.html https://www.visitscotland.com/info/see-do/the-italian-chapel-p253741
  5. 20% to 30% fat I put in my game mince. Most of it cooks out. Go less than 20% and you're talking dry nasty tasteless sausage. That's my opinion and you're entitled to it,...
  6. I just got rid of my Super Nova. It could of been the guy behind the trigger - but it never cycled shells properly (for me). Brought it back to the shop - and they gladly test fired it with me present. No issues - it cycled as it should. Then I take it to the field for pigeon shooting - and it would not cycle. Tried different shells and loads - all at least 70mm as the manual says - and it never consistently cycled (for me) Good luck if you go that route..
  7. Nice replies from members - but to be honest, this is NOT the place to look for permissions. Most people in PW already have, or are looking, for permissions - generally not offering permissions. Perhaps on a rape and bean farmer's forum you should ask. That said, have you heard of NPPC? http://www.nppc.co.uk/ Before me kids starting taking more and more of my time - I used http://www.nppc.co.uk/ - It was easier than knocking on doors.
  8. More: Her guts were healthy; Liver, Lungs, Lymph Nodes - all good - no sign of disease and her rumen full of green after a nights feeding. Gralloched - head & Feet cut off - in fur - she weighed 42 kilos. Watching here for a few minutes before shooting - I didn't notice anything abnormal about her or her walk. Amazing how wild beasts adapt. That said - if not my bullet, her feet would have slowly done her in eventually.
  9. Shot this Beast yesterday in Southwest Scotland - between Newton Stewart and Girvan. Anyone ever see Hooves like this??
  10. 1) Because Cops cannot be everywhere. 2) Cops are not a personal Protection Force 3) Sadly, too many Americans are violent 4) The most lawless places in the US are the places where firearms are restricted 3) Texas, Florida, where concealed carry is legal - there's less gun crime than New York City and Chicago where guns are severely restricted. 5) Out law guns - and only out laws will have guns 6) Americans believe each person has an inherent right to self defense 7) Go here for the rest of the story: http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.html
  11. I'm a Yank and I'm voting for Trump. Obama & Clinton are part of the disease - Trump is the best cure at the moment. Sometimes you need a change, even if you don't like what change looks like.
  12. Tight!!! Me??? Guess it looks that way. I forgot what's it's like NOT to have free access to shooting opportunities. Having several cost free permissions from farmer and land owner friends has made me loose touch with reality. The reality that most people don't have readily available shooting opportunities. Sorry for appearing to be tight
  13. Thank you all for the replies and links. It's way too easy to read too much into these things.
  14. Okay, I'm sure I'm reading too much in too this, but may I have a few opinions on when it's legal to shoot rabbits in England?? I have a permission - about twenty acres - that is overrun by rabbits, and the land owner has asked me to reduce the numbers. Can I cull the bunnies without legal grief??? In particular, as below from the BACS website, what does "In England and Wales occupiers or authorised persons may only take and kill ground game on moorland or unenclosed land between 1 September and 31 March inclusive." mean? Thanks,... Ground Game Open Seasons (dates inclusive) Species England & Wales Scotland Northern Ireland Isle of Man Brown Hare Jan 1 – Dec 31 moorland & unenclosed land is subject to a close season (see below) Open season Oct 1 – Jan 31 Aug 12 – Jan 31* Brown or common hare Oct 1 – Jan 31 Mountain Hare Open season Aug 1 – Feb 28/29 Rabbit Jan 1 – Dec 31 moorland & unenclosed land is subject to a close season (see below) Jan 1 – Dec 31 moorland & unenclosed land is subject to a close season (see below) Rabbit is classed as a pest and therefore not subject to a close season No close season * The Special Protection Order previously issued to give Irish hare additional protection is no longer in place and therefore the Irish Hare is now subject to an open season as above. Moorland and unenclosed land does not include arable land or detached portions of land less than 25 acres which adjoins arable land. In England and Wales occupiers or authorised persons may only take and kill ground game on moorland or unenclosed land between 1 September and 31 March inclusive. Firearms may only be used for such purposes between 11 December and 31 March (Ground Game Act 1880 Section 1 (3) and Ground Game (Amendment) Act 1906 Section 2) In Scotland, the occupier of the land or persons authorised by him may kill rabbit throughout the year on moorland and unenclosed land (not being arable) by all legal means other than by shooting, and by means of firearms over the period from 1 July to 31 March inclusive (Section 1 (3) of the Ground Game Act 1880 as modified by the Agriculture (Scotland) Act 1948). Hares are subject to a close season (Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011) (see above).
  15. Not sorry to say - but get rid of the Girl Friend. You're not married, not committed, and no need to accommodate an unreasonable request. There're plenty of cows that give away free milk. Caution: Always be aware of free milk, cause milk ain't free!!! Being okay with your shooting, but not okay with a gun - in a safe - in the house, is typical Female logic. Decide what's more important to you, your hobby - or her. If she's the best thing that ever happened to you. Then giving up shooting is no big deal. But, if you're the best thing that ever happened to her. Letting you keep a gun in the house - in a safe - should not be an issue. What's greater??? Her love for you - or her unreasonable fear of guns??? If you do store your shotgun off site to keep her - it's the beginning of the end for your sport shooting activity.
  16. California has some of the strictest firearms laws on the books - https://en.wikipedia...Concealed_carry. In California, only the terrorists, criminals, and gangbangers get to carry guns.
  17. Or Paris What "twisted ideology" is that??? Please explain.
  18. Stupid Question from a Novice: What's a Brancher???
  19. I do a few hogs roasts every summer. Last pig I purchased was 102 lbs( 50 kilos) - and cost 170 quid at my my local butcher. Side note: I ordered a 50 pound pig, the order taker wrote it down as Kilograms. Had a lot of extra pork that day!
  20. And Obama has had 7 years to hit "the reset button". Regardless of what Bush and Blair did - Messiah Obama has had time to try and correct it. His policies have made it worse. http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2015/09/04/where_are_the_calls_for_obama_to_stop_the_syrian_refugee_crisis_he_created
  21. None too Bright Either. My route to work takes me on an A road for a few miles. This morning I noticed a bike, and a "corpse" in the grassy verge - not more than 3 feet from the side of the road. Obviously I thought there was a biker/car collision with the car as winner. So, I pulled over, got out of my car and checked on the bloke. He was taking a nap. Taking a nap three feet from an A road with 60 mile an hour traffic whizzing by!! You can't make this stuff up. I tried to wake him, but he was snoring away and then thought it best to let sleeping dogs lie.
