Biggest
I just read loads of posts on here. Plus there is a thread at the top of the tips and tricks page which shows different decoy patterns. Although I will keep an eye on this to see if a good book is recommended . Blunderbuss
I would like to start getting into this fantastic sport of decoying. but i havent got a clue wgere to start. Can anyone recommend me a book that will get me started in the world of pigeon decoying, Thanks, Rizzini. Archie Coats pigeon shooting is the classic. A little dated now and was written well before magnets and all the other gadgets were invented, but as a treatise on pure fieldcraft it's brill. I've just re-read my second hand copy, which I bought off someone on here. Keep an eye out as they do come up every now and then. The Pigeon Shooter by John Batley is very good and more up to date than Archie Coats' one. John Humphreys also wrote one but can't recall the title I'm afraid Edited April 17, 2011 by Blunderbuss

steve_b_wales
Try and get a few DVD's on pigeon shooting. You'll see how it's done. Also, if possible, try and get out with an experienced pigeon shooter. You should learn more that way, than reading any book.
big simmo999
Yep - I agree with all the above - but I would add the latest pigeon shooting book by Eric Prior...its very good Also have a search on youtube - there's a fair few clips on there
John_R
John Batley's book is very good. Each to their own, but I learn a lot from books. You can read anywhere/anytime unlike DVDs etc!
dougall
Another vote for John Batleys book 'The Pigeon Shooter'..most up to date, covers magnets as well as all the important stuff!Sure it'll be on amazon/ebay etc.. ATB
webber
The Archie Coates book is an interesting read, but much of the information is now dated. I've not read the book by John Humphreys, and wouldn't waste mt brass buying it to read. I found the book by John Batley very informative and worthwhile. I loaned my copy to a novice several years ago, it was obviously a gripping read as he has yet to return it. webber
rtaylor
I've just bought the John Batley book of ebay, seems very good from the initial flick through. I have watched some of his DVD's and the one with him and Major Coats. Both excellent watches and well worth a look.
Highlander
The only problem with books and certainly with DVDs is no one ever wrote about or filmed a bad or an average days pigeon shooting and yet you'll get many more of those than 'Red Letter Days'. I hope you're the patient type!
Pigeon love
I found Chris Greens DVD's very usful, along with John Batley "pigeon shooting" There is also plenty of video's for tips and tricks on good old You Tube.
