Shotgun Ammo Storage - Cabinet Recommendations please

Hi,

I'm trying to find a good metal cabinet for storing bulk shotgun cartridges. I'm shooting clays a lot more regularly than I used to (and I also want to bulk buy for our game shoot) but want to keep the carts securely.

Looking for a metal cabinet that locks and will hold 5-10k cartridges (would consider multiple smaller capacity if the price is right).

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

Dave

Thats a big box! Second had Van vault off ebay? But I am sure your supposed to use wood? and as there is no legal requirement to lock up section 2 ammo then why bother with a big heavy box? where will you be keeping them? Spare bedroom? Loft? garage?

Not heard that. Do you know why?

That's part of the problem... We're hoping to move soon and I want all bases covered.

Cheers

Ask in Builders merchants about site boxes - these are large metal boxes either incorporating locks or protected padlocks for tradesmen to store their tools in on site. You can get them freestanding or on wheels.

I use a van vault 2 (about £150 new), I only ever buy cart 1000 at a time but i'm sure it would hold 6000 maybee more.

Cool, will have a measure up (I've also found a few second hand coat lockers that might fit the bill....).

Cheers

RE boxes made of wood:

Not heard that. Do you know why?

It is required for storing back powder (on explosives license). Wood that doesn't give off too much shrapnel is probably best (ply/MDF). It also doesn't suffer from condensation. This sort of box is not meant to be locked down, so that it can be moved easily if there is a fire.

Bear in mind when selecting space that 10k carts are VERY heavy. Assuming 28g loads, that's 280 kilos + primers/wadding/casings/boxes. Most loft rafters were designed to hold boxes of Christmas decorations rather than a 45st. lump on a couple of beams.

I bought a Brattonsound SC2S Bulk Storage Safe with 2 Shelves (916 x 407 x 320) 33Kg. Shop around and you can pick one up for less that £150.

A bit OTT I know, especially as there is little in the way of regs to do with storing carts. I figured if there ever was an issue then I'd be covered by 'reasonable effort'. I have it bolted (Excalibur screw bolts) to the wall in the corcer of the garage with it's hinge side nearest the wall. I usually buy carts in 1000 buys - each of the three compartments holds about 900.
