PhilR
Hi Guys, Do any of you use pukka owl decoys or being an inventive lot have you made one? An off the wall thought was whether a kids stuffed toy such as a teddy bear would lure crows in close enough to shoot. I'm sure I read on here someone converted a push along stuffed horse, I think it was, into a fox decoy. Phil
steve_b_wales
I have both the small and eagle owl decoys, and have never found them to be much good. I intend to try the eagle one again, by perching it on some branches, and then placing crow decoys above it. This is supposed to give the crows enough confidence to mob it. I have been working on a fox pelt that I've tanned. I'm in the proces of fixing a frame to it, so that I can place it out in the fields. This should bring the magpies and crows close to it. The Warrener did a similar thing with a fox pelt years ago, by draping the pelt over some sticks. The crows went beserk and he had a good result. Steve. henry d
Used the eagle owl to good result on a "flight line" but we use a dead crow/rook/jackdaw at its talons to look like it has a hold of it and the crows go mad at it and make for some hard shots as they swoop down. I would like to try it again with a crow on a flapper next to it as I think it would be the canines nethers.
steve_b_wales
A crow or jackdaw on a flapper works well. I use one with an intermittent timer, which 'flaps' for 30 times and stops for 8 seconds. I find this particulary good for jackdaws. Steve.
PhilR
Thanks for the responses chaps. Changing the subject slightly but still on alternative decoys I spotted this little chap in Asda for a fiver the other day, it is a dog's toy and is supposed to be a fox. I chucked it out near the pattern and I think it helped me bag some of the ten in the pic. A few of the crows came down low and slow to have a look which was their misfortune. I've also modded my FUDS by removing the big metal plate and put them on bent bike spokes which I insert into bamboo canes about 1ft long and this gives the decoys movement. I've got a problem using my Promos caller here at #14, perhaps you might be able to help with that. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/153316-primos-power-crow-call/ Cheers, Phil
PhilR
that'll be me then have yet to try it out propelly Yep, that's the one that prompted me to think outside the box, you've got to give it a run to see if it works.
Beardo
came across this the other day.... looks like an interesting twist on the owl decoy idea - with movement. it's designed as a pigeon deterrent. http://www.pigeonstop.co.uk/wind_action_owl_decoy.asp

Thats exactly what i do 1 or sometimes 2 inermittent flappers and some flock coated decoys and dead birds,i,ve tried the eagle owl several times but don't find it any good. my last outing i set up with 6 decoys 1 flapper and a dead crow on a bobber, ishot 118 in 4 hours,i acctually made my hide in the corner of the farmer's garden as thats where the flightline was, they were a mixture of crows ,jackdaws and rooks.
