Warning - BASC

Recommended Posts

Just been on the phone to BASC after noticing on their site that my membership was lapsed...even though i'm fully paid until 31/10/2011. :hmm:

I cancelled all of my direct debits when i moved house. Was waiting on a new build being readied for a few months and gradually set up new ones once i'd moved in.

Just getting around to the Basc 1 now as i realised no magazine was coming..my fault i thought, never gave them my new address.

Waiting on them getting back, but seems my membership was cancelled in January even though as previously stated,i'm fully paid up until the end of October.

So if any of you have done similar, please check that you are still covered. :good:

yep I'd be raising the roof on that one as you are a member still. I'm guessing its a foul up with the monthly DD's. I almost did the same when I was clearing out DD's and thinking about paying on a card I get cash back on so could have been in the same situation.

They just rang and said it was lapsed in Jan due to them changing over to automation, but it's back up and running now..only until it expires as normal.

Said that i was still covered..when i asked for proof, they said, well you had your membership card as proof.

If anyone wants to check, just log on to their website and fill in your details on the membership renewal page, should tell you if yours has lapsed or not.

Part of the problem would have been, that we got notification from your bank that the DD had been cancelled, not an issue in its own right but then we got your copies of Shooting & Conservation returned by the post office marked 'adressee gone away'.

However, very pleased its all sorted and yes I agree, I would urge all members to log onto the members area of the BASC web site so you can check your membership, etc.

In the not too fat distant, we will be sending our e-mail newsletters to all our members but only if we have your e-mail address of course, so if you want to start seeing our e-mail newsletters please set up your BASC on line account as soon as possible.

Thanks

great communication David, why not issue a circular to this effect instead of fire fighting on forum

This was not a general problem / issue with all DD payers, hence no need for a general communication to all members.

As I said, in this specific case we had a message from the bank that the member had cancelled his DD, AND we knew the member had moved but had no new address. We had no way of getting in touch.

Its not uncommon for member to change their method of payment of course, but its usually changing from one type of payment to another, not just cancelling it all together.

When we transferred all the DD records to the new part of our database when we introduced phased payments, we could only move over the DD accounts that were still active obviously, and this is where the OPs membership was effectively lapsed off as far as our DD system was concerned.

But as he had paid for 12 months membership and had not resigned he would still be covered we just did not know where he was!

all very good and I assume BASC keeps all such details confidential ,

I say this as I am having problems and found my details have been on sale by a marketing company and I kept getting mail from E-On I even wrote back saying take me off your list and they mailed me about twice a month, turns out they got my details from a company called call credit http://www.callcredit.co.uk/

These people specialise in selling on details to others and it takes a fair bit of work to stop them

On a side note Grasshopper I'm sure I recently changed my address online and worked very smoothly. Pav I'd be amazed if they were to sell on our details its not in their interest at all.

BASC does not sell or give the membership data to anyone, apart from the secure mailing houses that send out the membership cards, magazines, and reminders.

All data thus sent is on a 'one use' policy - ie once used it gets destroyed.

Don't tell anyone but there is the odd 'sleeper' address in there so we can check if somone does nick the data...shhhh! :yp:

Indeed, let’s see if we can get a small group of PW members who want to come and look at our offices and meet some of the team and I will set up a series of short presentations for you all on:

The current political environment we face and what roll BASC is playing

Current key issues on firearms - BASC relationships with ACPO and the Home Office, and the licensing teams in the UK

Current key issues on conservation & land management

Anything else?
