.223 is legal for Roe a little boat ride over the water to Scotland.

That would be great, just need some  fool to fix me up with them

Could i suggest expanding your search post request to include will travel to the mainland ie. England, Scotland, Wales?? it came over that you want to shoot in Ireland only, you could be lucky and get a hit over the water?

Correct me if I'm wrong but if memory serves it use to be legal to shoot muntjack with a shotgun and AAA shot under certain circumstances (I know you have a .223) but a amendments means it is now illegal to use anything less than a .240 caliber rifle.

See Schedule 2 at the bottom of the page on this link Deer Act 1991

Keep up to date and see: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2007/2183/article/3/made

And note that Munjac and CWD can be shot in England with a .223

Also, the famers' exemtion you refer to with shotgun and AAA shot still remains in place provided certain conditions are met

I know the boy’s Irish but this is kinda silly….with a .223 he’s either got to travel to Scotland to shoot a roe or travel to south/east England to shoot Muntjac or a CWD (when they are in season). Go figure. .223 is a foxing calibre NOT a deer stalking calibre no matter what the legals say!

You say i have to travel to Scotland or south/east England to shoot deer with .223 then later you say its a foxing calibre not deer,

Highlander,

Got to disagree with you on this one, I am a big fan of the .22 centerfires for Roe deer and have used them a lot, like many other keepers and stalkers in Scotland.

I have a regular client from Lincolnshire who has 30-06 and .243 but still prefers to bring his .223 when he comes up to stalk with me, he's shot 10 medal class bucks with it in the last 4 years.

I personally use a 22-250 and find the fast bullet and expansion suits Roe perfectly, usually dropping them on the spot or within a few steps.

Cheers,

Mark.

Maybe not Irish by birth but surely someone in your family must be! :P

Why I’m even bothering to explain this is beyond me…I must be bored today!

The law in the UK has recently been changed (well 2007) to allow the use of .223 on Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer ONLY. As these species are only present in (for the sake of argument) the southern and eastern parts of ENGLAND that’s where you’d have to go to shoot one. I thought I might have been wrong in saying Scotland for Roe as under Scottish law it’s bullet weight/velocity that determines what you can (legally) shoot and I don’t think .223 comes up to scratch. I don’t know for sure and I’m not about to spend time looking it up however Mark Robson has just confirmed it’s OK so that’s good enough for me!

My thoughts are still, why would you buy a rifle in a caliber that’s useful for fox shooting BUT not much use (or generally legal) for deer shooting and then think about going deer stalking so far from home?
