LittleDoc
Hello across the Pond, Don't mean to barge in on your board, but I have read a few pieces about Wood Pigeon shooting over here and find them very interesting. I have lurked a bit on the forum---enough I think to have a grasp of how you go about it. We shoot ferals over here in a less organized fashion (mainly trying to set up on a flight line into a feed field or feed lot). I have never used decoys at all. Have had great fun at any rate. Well, to the point. I plan to be in Ireland June 8-21 and I wonder if it would be possible to arrange a day's shooting in that time period. I would need outfitting too, because I think it would be easier than trying to bring guns over for the one day's shooting. Best I can hope for, I'm afraid the rest of time will be doing the tourist thing with "SHE-WHO-MUST-BE-OBEYED" (maybe a little fishing). Thanks for any advice you may have. Best regards, LittleDoc

Lord Geordie
Fishing in Ireland is top notch you shouldn't be dissapointed. As for the Woodies perhaps one of the Irish members can stump up here to help you out Welcome to the site LG
Cranfield
LittleDoc, welcome and you can "barge in" any time you want. Which part of Ireland are you visiting and what type of fishing might you be interested in ? Arranging guided fishing, including equipment, will be quite easy, but best booked in advance. We have a large contingent of Irish members and they may be able to provide some more information.
LittleDoc
throdgrain, Lord Geordie, and Cranfield, thank you all for the replys. As to the travel plans nothing definite decided yet. We have 13 days in country and I was rather hoping to plan around the fishing and shooting. I have been researching the fishing in a couple of books by Peter O'Reilly and on the Central Fisheries Board website. Thought at first that river fishing for trout would be the thing, but the lough fishing intrigues as well. The website has links to guides and ghillies, but I would appreciate any personal recommendations from yourselves as to places or people you thought highly of. As for the wood pigeons, how is June in general for shooting opportunities and could you give me a primer on what regulations govern pigeon shooting, i.e. what permits I would need to obtain, closed seasons, etc. Thank you all for your gracious assistance and we shall hope to hear from the Irish. Best, LittleDoc

lurcherboy
Hope you have good fishing in Ireland Littledoc. The waters are very clear now though so Pike might be your best quarry. LB
Cranfield
Does anyone know of any Pigeon Guides in Ireland ?
Teal
Not as far as I am aware. There are not as many pigeons in ireland as england that is for sure. That said there are pigeons and decent bags can be made, and I have a friend from Fermanagh who went to the republic and managed with a friend to shoot over 300. Your best bet might just be trying to find someone who is willing to take you out when you get there or speaking to the place you are staying and see if they can organise something. I very much think it will be going out just with a local shooter, so it is pot luck, but you might strike lucky.
Cranfield
A Google search finds lots of guided fishing options (sea, sea trout, salmon, freshwater), some are linked with accommodation. Apart from clay pigeon shooting, or wildfowl and snipe in season (not June), I can't find any reference to guided pigeon shooting. Can any of the other members from Ireland make any suggestions please ?
bigdev
Not to many woodies in N/ireland !! And as far as i know` there is no Guides in the North. But not sure about the South? i think they get alot more woodies due to the crops they sow. miroku38
I come fromthe South of Ireland and as far as i know there is no pigeon guides. As Teal said the number of woddies in Ireland is far less then in the UK. All you can hope for is to meet someone local in a pub and hopefully sort something out. As for the fishing you should have no problem getting that. Where exactly are you going to be?
LittleDoc
Thanks for the information bigdev and miroku38. It sounds like the pigeons will be catch-as-catch-can but that's alright. If we can't work it out, then I have a good excuse to come back-right? The general plan is to start out in Dublin and work around roughly clockwise winding up back in Dublin in a fortnight. It looks like we will cross lots of good fishing territory and I am open to river or lough fishing for trout. What would you suggest miroku38 for mid-June?
