Robin128
Here's a stupid question... Just noticed the price of the Sovereign 28g 7.5 cartridges and the faster 1600 fps spec...are these better at hitting English Sporting clays, or shall I get a white stick? beretta
not really
Hamster
All things being equal, speedier the better but they are not equal. Fast beyond about 1450 is too much for most shoulders/necks/heads.
beretta
slower the better for me. better patterns.
Dunkield
I was about to say there must be a velocity point when the pattern becomes blown
EdSolomons
Use the cheapest ounce load you can get, it won't lose you any birds and you get more of them! So long as it doesn't push you about there's not a bad plaswad to be found.
Robin128
Thanks for replies...I'll stick to the 2.5" 28gm plastic 7.5 shot Super Gems by Ganebore. As for recoil, 12G normally kicks the proverbial out of me ...so s1 Xtrema2 has kickoff and White Onyx has a Gracoil, fitted by yours truely... Hamster
I was about to say there must be a velocity point when the pattern becomes blown You`d think but there isn`t so long as the manufacturer balances things up with the right powder, shot, cup etc. Very fast shells pattern just as well as the slow stuff, if they didn`t the good guys wouldn`t buy them. Still, it`s a nice enough quip from knownothing journo`s who couldn`t hit a cow`s back end with fast or slow.
Robin128
I guess with the faster cartridges given the same bird its about lead.
beretta
slower carts give better patterns and its a well known fact. carts over about 1550 start to blow a bit thats why the majority are around 13/14. why would the good guys always want faster ones they dont, they want ones that pattern well. Hamster
I agree 1550 is getting on a bit , 1450 or a tiny bit less is fine. What I`m trying to say is to all intents and purposes a fast competition shell tends to be bloody well made and will kill/pattern as good as a slow well made one. If you pitch a good, fast competition clay shell against a good slow clay shell, the former will consume the latter for breakfast. That`s why clay shooters pay top wack for good fast shells. If slow patterned better, whatever better means, somebody would soon offer a line and clean up on the circuit wouldn`t they? The fact that manufacturers aren`t falling over themselves to offer such a shell tells us all we need to know. I literally can`t recall the last competition of any importance being won by anything other than top comp shells, and they all tend to be fast. beretta
if you like fast carts use them i dont but not all shooters are taken in by manufacturers specs, fast is best. utter trash. my opinion only from years of testing.
Hamster
I shoot the fastest I can live with recoil wise, by no means fastest available.
sitsinhedges
Can't see the point of so called fast cartridges unless you like having your shoulder knocked off, and the difference in terms of lead between the fastest and slowest is tiny. I'd rather use a slower softer one and enjoy my shooting
magman
Shoot with what you feel comfortable with , just learn the lead you need with them and stick to them
brian28
robin128 you did a nice job with that recoil pad impressed
Robin128
Thanks Brian28, Surprising what someone can do with a bandsaw, router and linisher...not to mention very fine paper and loads of patience. Bought a stock from Numrich, so I have the original ... if a sale is called for.
Guest cookoff013
i hear 1200fps is where patterns start opening up and becoming patterns, not like subs that can hotcore. i`ve used a few 1500fps loads and cant be doing with all that grunt for few fps more. 1300fps is more than enough for clays. 1100 fps is very soft for clays,
