hi gents, did the service on my tranny van today, changed the fuel filter, thought id bled it, fired it up and all was well for a minute.

Then she stopped working, me thinks there is air in the pipes twixt the pump and injectors, my question is this, how do i get the stuff out?

it's a 2001 2.0L duratorq lump by the way.

thanks in advance,

gram.

I might be wrong but as it is relatively new in diesel terms, does it automatically bleed if you keep cranking the engine over?

hi chap, thanks for the quick reply, in answer i'd "heard" this can damage a fuel pump on a tranny van and didn't want to risk it just in case, however, spoke to a couple of people and they reckon to loosen the first injector, crank it over to get the air out then re tighten after it fires up, will this work?

what type of fuel filter is fitted is it the screw on canister type or the one that fits between two part houseing or the type that fits up inside the housing and you tighten a butterfly nut to grip it in place .

sounds loike you havent got an air tight seal on new filter and how it ran ok for a little while it was using deisel left in pump and pipes.

if its of a type of filter you can refill with diesel then do that and refit it making sure you havent got any kinks in the new sealing ring crack open injector pipes one at a time until you have fuel squirting out then tighten and move on to next pipe and so on till all pipes are squirting fuel tighten and that should be it mate

guys, thanks for your help :good: all working now, i primed the new filter, it was fitted properly, no leaks, there's a pump button and a bleed screw on top of the filter housing, pumped this until there was no more air coming out, it seems that there might have been a bit of an air lock and i mmissed it. tried cracking the injectors and bleeding them this way and it seems to have done the trick nicely, much obliged,

ta very much.

I used to be an R&D tech for Ford, the last thing you want to do on the newer diesels is just keep cranking them over in the hope it will pull up the fuel. Even priming the new filter doesn't usually work, the answer is a small pump attach it to the out pipe on the filter and draw the diesel up until it's flowing ( preferably into a container and not your boots ). Then start the engine ,it wil probably stumble but should keep going ,let it idle for five minutes.
