Dave-G
I have seen several fields - some adjoining and definitely belonging to the same farm - with just one or maybe two combine cuts along the edge of a field. Is that to get a test sample of what each field might produce?
ColinF
Probably just getting a sample to see if its ready to harvest.
jasons gold
Probably just getting a sample to see if its ready to harvest. Its to get air in to the crop to help dry it out. And the edge of the field is normally the wettest so i am told

bobt
They also like to tell their mates in the pub, "yes we have made a start" well my farmers all do as I drink with them,

b325
Never heard of getting air into the crop.We cut a couple of times round our first wheat field yesterday and stopped because its not quite ready. There is a lot of secondry growth this year which could mean a later than usual start for some. Ditto. And the reason we cut round silage fields is so that we can mow up and down without driving over standing grass.

Thats spot on, to much backside ache getting headers on and off. Or maybe a machinery breakdown, combine or drier perhaps. A
