northy
Ok, For many years I’ve heard people say “When gutting rabbits check the liver and kidneys”, and I have always done this – but I have never seen anything unusual….. Until this morning! Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this liver? The kidneys were fine, but I thought that the lungs were a lot redder [bloodier] that normal – especially for a head shot. Thanks Northy
Frenchieboy
Looking at the photos I would say it most likely to be liver fluke, but don't take my word for it, get a second opinion mate! If it is you could safely eat the rabbit but discard the liver first!
wildfowler.250
Normally I eat them but not when there's THAT many white bits. Think it's fluke but not sure

JustJon
Looks like hepatitis to me, definately not an expert though and photos are always hard - I would reject as rabbit is probably not 100% and there may be other issues? Better safe than sorry ?

Frenchieboy
Am with Frenchie worms seen this a lot lateley meats fine to eat I've been seeing this quite a bit myself lately. It seems that the problem is more predominant after we have had a lot of rain and the ground is waterlogged. That is why I suggested fluke as it is a type of snail that carries it (So I am led to believe) and they are more likely to be active in the damp ground and grass where they are more likely to be injested by the feeding rabbits, but I could easily be wrong! If I am wrong then someone will surely correct me!
apache
The most likely would be coccidiosis from the picture. Liver fluke do have a mud snail as an intermediate host and do burrow through the liver but tend to leave pale scars unless a large number are ingested at once and then the liver can rupture. Gutty Boots
I'm with Apache on this, at first glance looks typical of coccidiosis. Hepatitis is a generalised term for any inflammation of the liver.
Dougy
I'm with Apache on this, at first glance looks typical of coccidiosis. Hepatitis is a generalised term for any inflammation of the liver. +1 most probable cause is eating there own Poo ( which they do naturally being able to get more nutrients from it 2nd time round) spots on livers are quite common in bunnies, ok to eat the meat
Frenchieboy
I am going to take a back seat on this one now! I gabve an opinion but I did say that a second opinion would be worth waiting for as I could be wrong. I will still follow this thread and see how it developes but I don't want to get into any debate on something that I am not certain of and it does seem that I could well be wrong in my opinion! No offence meant to anyone by posting this reply!
30-6
I reckon 99 percent of rabbits i get have an unhealthy liver of varying degree. I give them to different people and they all seem ok after years of eating them (minus the liver).
spannermonkeymark
I was told it was fat deposits in the liver i have seen it lots mostly on rabbits with lots of body fat.

No. The liver stores fat in a homogeneous fashion - ie evenly. The liver can appear yellowed with rounded edges but not patchy.
