njc110381
I'm looking at getting myself a decent set of AT tyres for my Ford Ranger before winter sets in. At the moment it has some pretty hopeless examples on it! My first thought was BFG AT, but I wouldn't mind something slightly more agressive. For anyone who remembers them the BFG Trac-edge is the sort of thing I'm looking for. Not a mud terrain, but slightly better in the mud than an AT. Tyre size is 235/75R15. Any suggestions? al4x
the trac edge were great I had a set on my last L200 decent grip off road and low levels of on road noise. However no longer produced but they are copied by the remould companies so depends if you mind fitting a set of them. These are very close pattern wise http://www.tyresdirectuk.co.uk/xcart/product.php?productid=16419&cat=255&page=1 what will put you off bfg AT's is the price but they are worth it if you aim to keep the vehicle long term
Billy.
I've got the BFG AT and they work a charm in the mud - I've been out lamping on newly cut fields after an all day downpour with no issues. My criticism would be the size. I have 245 75 16. I would certainly up that to 245 85 16 next time.
njc110381
Supposedly the Trac edge replacements are Commercial traction or something? But they sound hopeless from reading reviews. I'm not a remould fan if I'm honest and would rather have something half decent on there. The Cooper Discoverer ST sound good, but I've not heard that much about them. Are they budget tyres that are well marketed, or are they actually as good as claimed? BFG AT are expensive but as with most things you get what you pay for. That said, I had Kumho MT's on my Defender and they were pretty respectable both on and off road. For the Ranger though they're a bit agressive, and being rear wheel drive only on the road I think they will struggle on the back on wet roundabouts! BFG AT seem to be the tyre most people lean towards. For good reason I'm sure.
al4x
on a pickup AT's will get you everywhere you should be going, I keep hearing about people with issues with pickups on roundabouts and can safely say I've never had an issue but mine have all had AT's or similar on. The BFG would be my first choice then the grabber AT2's but they aren't as good either off road or economy wise. Hard to comment on the coopers as I don't know anyone with any that go off road at all, everyone I know has either BFG's or Grabbers which probably says a bit. njc110381
The ground clearance on the Ranger is going to be the limiting factor off road I think. Having said that I don't do anywhere near as much off road work as I used to so perhaps I don't really need anything too agressive? As it's a 4x4 though it makes sense to put something decent on it. There's little point having it if the tyres fill up with mud as soon as they enter a slightly damp field! I think I'm going to try to look at the Coopers in more detail, but as you say the BFG's are probably the sensible option and the one I may go for in the end. My only gripe with them is the price. With my habit of not keeping a vehicle for long enough to change the tyres twice, it could be a bit of a waste of money! I've alway put a decent set of boots on my trucks as soon as I can afford to and I've never needed to change them again!

bigmanuk
I have always had BFG AT's on my 4x4's. They are a superb all rounder. I have found anything more off-road based than this usually makes for really bad grip on the road; particularly when its raining. I use my truck for both off-road and motorway cruising so find these a good mix.
