Beardo
i just noticed Side-Lock is not listed though... Box-Lock A type of gun action, often recognisable by its squared appearance. Side-Lock: A gun with the main elements of the lock mechanism are mounted on removable plates which are attached to the sides of the action. Back-Lock: A backlock is where the mainspring is located behind the hammer in the lock. with a bar action or conventional sidelock, the mainspring is in front of the hammer lying along the bar of the gun; usually beside the cocking limb. Harnser
Side lock guns are the old traditional way of gun making . The locks and trigger mechanism are housed on the detachable lock plates and are easier to get to for repair and servicing . Unfortunately side locks are more expensive to make and require much more of the gun makers craft to make . The box lock is a much more simpler way to build a gun and the locks and triggers are housed in the front of the action and are easier to build and lend it self to being made with less of the gun makers art . Many will say that the boxlock is a more stronger and robust way to make a gun . A box lock is also cheaper to make . The box lock design lends it self more to wards mass production than a best side lock . I know which one that I like best . Harnser . Catweazle
A Sidelock can be made very slim and light, which can make a nice handling gun. A disadvantage is that you can find yourself with a gun that is difficult to re-assemble if you take it apart incorrectly, as I discovered when showing someone the hand detachable locks on mine
