durbsguy
I know this sounds like a stupid question but does anyone know the difference between a pistol and a rifle in terms of definition or at least point me in the right direction? I was thinking perhaps the barrel length or overall length. Upon asking the local firearms unit, I received the answer of when you purchase it, it would be defined as either, which doesn't quite answer the question. Gnome of the Woods
Basically if it has a stock and is over a certain length (cannot find the info at the moment) it is classed as a rifle and can be 12ft/lb Anything without a stock is a pistol and can only be 6ft/lb Very muddy waters but that is the basics. Searching for the definitive answer now! Paul

That is typical, they do not know the answer/don't want to make a comment, so they will almost always try and sidestep the question! ASSUMING NO FAC REQUIRED Max 6ft lb pistol 12ft lb max rifle, minimum 30cm barrel etc, minimum overall length of 60cm (I believe) Someone will straighten me out, but a lot more there than from your region! durbsguy
Thanks for the responses I am starting to understand a bit. The whole question arises from seeing a bullpup out on a mates farm over the weekend, which I found out was 22inches apparently, not than I'm complaining, just curious. johnbaz
Apparently, If an airgun starts life as a pistol (eg, Crosman 2240)then it has to stay a pistol, ie, if you fit a 2250 (Ratcatcher) stock and up the power, you'll feel the wrath of the law if you get caught with it.. Keith RW
A grey area that, as far as i am aware, has not yet been test cased in law. A 2240 with added stock would in appearance become a carbine rifle and not a pistol and as such "should" be ok provided it does not exceed the 12ftlb legal limit. 1322 pistols are often turned into very fine carbines. Another example is the Falcon range such as the FN8 pistol that can be put straight into a falcon rifle stock and the power level increased and hence become a rifle, the falcon range does not have any distinguishing marks that relate to its origins, like i say a grey area open to translation but not defined in legislation which i think we all may well agree is somewhat open to interpretation.
