berties
I just wish we could get back on a level playing field,I took out my second mortgage in 1990 with a 40% deposit and a rate of 12% and 10k i put in to do the property up,making the property triple in price when completed and they still wanted to retain 2.5k of the mortgage ,my point is that before this mess the banks would lend money out to any one with fairly low rates of interest,a french guy that worked for me 5 years ago been in the country 18 months left the radar of the uk owing 1k on a lease car and 26k on a loan,no intention of paying it back,at the same time the uk government were encouraging us to save,a lot of did but now get no interest while poorly administered loans are written off and interest rates are down,so we can kick start the economy, will it work?I think not ,save some money, spend the spare money you have got ,if you aint got it don't spent it ,whats the new idea on telly pay day loans,I heard a rumour if you take a £62 loan on a pdl and never paid it back in 8.5 years you would owe as much as USA,with this impact on loans what chance do we have
Good shot?
Good idea, except for me and mine. I have cleared all my debts, bar my last mortgage payment, and only have a credit card which is cleared each month....... what can I get to spend it on ? Something made in Britain, I am sure it wouldn,t take long for PW members to compile a list of such goods...
keg
The start of the thread reminds of a favourite of the hard left in the '80s- redistribution of wealth, the problem is, it doesn't take into account human nature, you could redistribute wealth, but even if we all had the same, within a week, it would be back to normal as somone would have invested and doubled it, others would have drunk it, smoked it, or saved it. Simples.
AVB
I agree with Jim and the economist on Radio 4 the other day ; it is mostly going to sit on the balance sheets of the banks it is handed to and the likes of us are not going to even get a sniff of it , despite it being ours . Take comfort from the fact that some people are going to have a very happy Christmas indeed courtesy of us lot. The Banks are culling people by the thousand. In addition there are thousands of people who will soon be put 'at risk' and will lose their jobs by Christmas. These people will not be happy. Everybody I know who works for a Bank is expecting to earn less this year than last year. These people will not be happy. In fact I don't know anybody working for a Bank who will be happy. Christmas has oficially been cancelled this year.

It would be the shortest list in the world
pimpkiller
its the cost of living that's killed this country dead. House prices, fuel, utilities and food. The solution usualy is sell stuff cheap and people will start buying, unfortunately the government is dishing out money, and not clamping down so they can continue to rip people off.
