Dogs and Cows

Long story short, my first Goose this year was not picked as the marsh I had to get the dog onto had cattle, that became apparent as light broke... Dog got chased down and I had to call her up. Discussed with Grandalf who sent me this so I thought I would share it if they can take on a bear what chance a Lab?

Can't verify it, but Canadian cousin says the bear died of a punctured lung.

many underestimate cows, if they have calves at heel they can be especially bad and unprovocted attacks from afar are quite common place on dogs. A dog off the lead can at least outrun them, if the dog will stand its ground you can both be in bother

Cows hate dogs big time. Walk into a field of cows and they will all glare constantly at the dog.

 

I avoid whenever possible.

Cows can spook for many reasons. I walked into one of our fields a few years ago with my son. The beef cattle jumped up ran to the corner of the field. Jumped and smashed into a metal five bar gate and spent the afternoon running round a field of wheat about a week off harvesting.

I had been in there loads and shot in there with them but they spooked at the little one with me. If they are in a funny mooood to never know what they will do.

Likewise, I can still remember getting knocked through a 5 bar wooden gate as a youngster :unsure: :blink: If I get caught out I leave the dog sitting to distract them whilst I retreat - well, he can run faster than me & Cow's
