Shotgun ownership (age)

I think what the OP is trying to say is that he is 16/17 and a certificate holder and wants to know if he can keep his shotguns in a house where nobody else (ie over the age of 18) has a certificate.

Correct, I am 16 at the moment and soon to be 17. Nobody else in the household has a certificate, and want to know If I need to live with somebody over 18 with a sgc? If not I have family and friends that will keep a shotgun for me until I am 18.

Thanks, hotshot.

Agree with Dsn,technically you cannot have gun or I believe purchase cartridges until 18.I presume at point you got certificate you did not intend to buy at that point? Thus no safe etc..?Get friend relative with certificate to buy it/store it,it can of course go on your license as well as theirs until u r 18.

If any doubt call your FEO,they don't bite. Also I believe if you read the sertificate it actually says on it?

My son just had his home visit for his SGC, the guy said he would recommend him to have one, but only because we want to shoot at a local ground where only cert holders are allowed, they are turning down most under 18's he said, unless they can prove a real need for a cert, and not just able to go around with a SGC holder over 21.

Im the only shooting sportsman in my family and currently hold a valid shotgun certificate and have done since i was 15. I have my own cabinate where i keep the gun in my house. I was gifted the gun by a friend as you cannot buy a gun or ammunition untill you are 18 (recently the age increased due to EU laws in the UK from 17-18 )It gets a bit annoying as there is only so many cartridges people will let you beg or "borrow". The clause in the shotgun certificate that talks about storage to prevent access from unauthorised personel meant that i had to be in controll of the keys at all time, as my parents count as unauthorised personel they were not aloud to have the keys also. When i was visited they asked me questions about my experience with shooting shotguns, where i would/ could shoot, common problems ie, misfires and putting a 20g in a 12g and other safety questions, i was also asked about footpaths and how far away you should be and also roads. other basic questions folowed such as the effective range and legal quarry, I was confident and competant enough to satisfy the police officers questions and i belive as long as you can do so and as long as your not epileptic or anything and have no prisonable offences, and can satisfy the safety side of things they cannot refuse you.

If you parents are concerned on the safety side of things your dad could also get a sgc and share storage with you, thus giving him access to the cabinate.

Basically to answer your Q,

YES, YOU CAN HAVE A GUN IF THERE IS SOMEONE WILLING TO GIFT YOU ONE WHO IS ALSO A CERT HOLDER. THIS IS THE SAME FOR CARTS TO.

YES, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN STORAGE BUT YOU MUST BE IN CONTROLL OF IT.

YES, YOU CAN SHOOT ON YOUR OWN ON PRIVATE PROPERTY WHERE YOU HAVE PERMISSION.

NO YOU CANNOT BUY A GUN.

NO YOU CANNOT BUY AMMUNITION.

IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES YOU WILL NEED TO BE ACCOMPANYED BY SOMEONE OVER 18 OR 21 DEPENDING ON CLAY GROUND RULES.

I would reccoment you read a book readily available from all good shooting shops called "shooting for beginners" but check BASC (whom you should also join for insurance) for updated of the law effecting young persons, it is very well written and has comprehensive info on all aspects of shooting and the law, with a section on young people.

If you want ill sent it you if you cover the postage costs.

sorry for the shouting all the best!

You'll be 18 by the time you get it anyway, it takes that long, haha. Ner only kidding, it's supposedly 4-5 month in some areas. Mines still in the process 3 months and a week on and no call yet. :( just remember all there after is to make sure your not nuts and to see that your safe. Apply all they will say is no at worse and I they say yes it's before the price rise comes into effect

Thanks DW444, very helpful! I think a friend has the book (shooting for beginners) but will pm you of not, thanks for the offer.

So, if I am considered sensible, and therefore, granted an SGC, I can legally keep a shotgun if gifted form another SGC holder? My old man and grandad both have SGC's so either of them could "gift" me a shotgun and it could be kept where I live in a cabinet?
