hi peeps bought a Lreg 2.4td ssrx hilux surf a few weeks back and after doing the jobs that needed doing done about 400 miles when engine started making horrible noise so after doing the injectors and some other things it didnt fix the fault so decided to go the route of replacing the engine.

well anyway today i changed the injectors in the second hand engine for the new ones and thought i,d take the glow plugs out of both engines to test them on a battery .

the second hand engine ones looked normal if not a bit sooty but when i took the ones out of my noisey engine i was very suprised to find all 4 were missing the last 2/3mm and looked like something had chewed the ends off i cant understand how it still started [was a little lumpy for the first few seconds].

will post pics soon .

so any ideas ????????????????.

in the pic with 2 glow plugs the one on the left is normal the one on right is the damaged one [ all 4 are like that ]

I'm not sure but you may find that at some time the cambelt has snaped and either this damage happened then or who ever replaced it didnt time it up right or the belt has jumped the sproket. If it has I'm not sure why I know smoe of the early surfs were renowed for cam shaft problems ,just my guess and somone else may be tell more, hope this is a help.Cheers Dave.

Cambelt snapping wouldnt do the glow plugs... could be the wrong length plugs were fitted?? or faling that the the big ends are completely kaput and allowing the pistons to travel further up the cylinders hitting the plugs??

Let us knw when you find out.

I've seen glow plugs melt, and the remains get embedded into the piston, causing nasty knocking.

As it's all 4 plugs, assuming they are the correct length plugs as already suggested, perhaps an electrical problem could have caused them all to run too hot, melting the tips off? I've never known of it happening, it's just a thought. Perhaps they've been left on too long at some point in their life.

Some engines can start well without heat, it just depends on the engine design, compression, general wear and the conditions.
