Mr_Logic
There is no difference except the packet and bullet weight. Hornady brass is generally pretty well regarded; I've not used and stick with Lapua where I want good brass.

Dave I don't reload, but from what I understand you have your answer in the 2 posts above! It is a delicate legal differentiation.
njc110381
Yeah it's easy. One is very frangible and is section 5 expanding - the other is very frangible and a target round.... Simple!
activeviii
one is cheaper to buy that the other but then you have to spend the savings on the fuel to get to shop.
chockmoose
Yeah it's easy. One is very frangible and is section 5 expanding - the other is very frangible and a target bullet.... Simple! If you care to omit the misuse of frangible [frangible adj; breakable or fragile - look it up] then you have it straight. Underdog
The difference between the two is how the law is an *** made by stupid poloticians that will do anything to fool the public to justify robbing us stupid with hi taxation for a grand cause, lining their own nests. coyotemaster
Perhaps I am misinterpreting the question but I took it that he was wondering ballisticly what the difference was. The Vmax has a thinner jacket toward the polymer insert while the jacket on the Amax is supposed to be a bit thicker. The obvious is the Vmax is (in .22 cal) available in 50 gr. while the Amax is 52 gr. I am not a fan of Hornady brass, I have read some unflattering reviews on it, I stick with WW brass and find it very good for the $.
coyotemaster
The Amax has a thicker jacket and longer ogive than the vmax, both shoot well. The guys I know that shoot the Amax say they don't tear up hides as badly as the vmax. I prefer WW brass to Hornady.
Beretta28g
Apart from whats been stated if you have upset plod and you are squeaky clean, but are using say A-Max on deer they can prosecute you for not using a bullet designed to expand in a controlled manner. But they may not.

coyotemaster
It sounds more like a political issue than a ballistic issue?!
sixhills 69
Many forum moderators have taken the wise step to block all discussion of subjects such as this, for a very good reason. People are digging holes for themselves. Im just getting started in reloading and was just asking a honest question wasn't trying to upset anyone
Mr_Logic
There is no difference between them except the box, even Hornady say so!

SPARKIE
from what ive seen the v max have a longer polimer tip internally to aid in rapid expansion and it looks like they have a larger airgap behind the tip other than that not much difference. vmax pics http://www.hornady.com/store/V-MAX-bullets/ amax pics http://www.hornady.com/store/A-MAX/
