Ten Bore

I've been having a good look on Guntrader recently (got a bit of a gun itch again) and I've decided I'd quite like a ten bore. A good family friend had one years ago and shot with my grandad, apparently it was a lovely gun but I've never seen or fired one. Before I jump into the unknown though I thought I'd ask here for opinions.

For a start how easy are they to feed? I'd want to use it now and again for non fowling work so can I get lead loads, and how much would they cost?

Second - home loading. I know damn well it's going to be what, £1 per shot to fire one? How much can it be home loaded for and how much is the basic kit to do it? I've never loaded for a shotgun before but I assume I could load light (er) loads for it?

Last of all, considering I have other shotguns for general use and I just want one even though I rarely shoot Ducks let alone Geese - how silly is this idea? I'll probably end up shooting Squirrels with it!

I'd be really grateful for opinions from shooters who actually use one.

EDIT... I know I could throw the same load with a 3.5" 12g, but that's not the same is it.

They are expensive to feed with shop bought fodder!! As for home laods expect a home load to set you back around a quidish, and if you use heavy shot a bit dearer. As for how much you use it, if you think thats an issue then dont buy 1 if your having doubts. when i loaded for my old zababla I ran and 1 3/4oz of heavy shot and 2 1/2oz of lead (Im in scotland) out of each barrel. Dont try and compare a 10 bore to a 12 bore 31/2" as most 10 bores have 3 1/2" chambers and are totally different animals. By all means shoot squirrels with it if you want, I shot skeet with mine twice much to amusement of all the on lookers that came out of the club house!! Ill tell you something though when I hit a clay there wasnt even hardly a puff of smoke from it. If you want any loading info Pm me and Ill happily help. If you do decided to go down this route then all I can add is enjoy the experiance as it is a fantastic gauge to shoot.

cheers

john

i have owned two ten bores and the biggest problem for me here in shetland was tring to find shells loaded with BB or AAA for shooting geese. the only shells i could get were either winchester or remmington turkey loads and they were usually loaded with no4's wich i found didn't work all that well because by the time the shot had opened up to give a pattern that wasn't peppering the bird the energy had gone out of the small pellets. ordering shells from south loaded with BB or AAA cost far too much . i was using my tens purely for geese, one of them was a spanish horror (i think it was built to fit a horse or something) with 3 1/2" chambers and the other was an old damascus hammer gun with 2 5/8" chambers which i had to reload for with black powder and no 1's. i never felt that a 10 bore had much more reach than a 12 but that was probably because of the cartridge choice i had.

Hi there I have a 10 semi and they are awesome the only problem I have is the ammo is very expensive I have some remington shells that are about £42 for ten so you don't want to miss. The 10 is great and if I were you I would just buy one you won't regret it.

Take a look here for shell prices, www.johnforsey.co.uk/ammunition.htm

Get an 8? I'd love to but have you seen what they cost?!

Tens can be picked up at an affordable price. I've got some kit to sell and I think I can make enough to cover one.

I guess kent that we just like decent calibres. Short of the .243 of course - we'll have to agree to disagree on that one! :good::lol:

Does that mean a car booty in the grounds at Highgrove - or the Red Lion carpark?

Hi Neil

The shop across the road from me happens to have a 10 in stock. We had a bit of a chat about it on Monday when I was last in there. He said it was bloody expensive to feed. I will be popping in again next Monday for some more ammo so I will give him a bit more of a grilling then and give you a shout about it.

Hi Neil

Sorry it's taken a while for me to get back to you about the 10. I had a word with the rfd across the road from me and he has 1 in it's a gunmark kestrel I think. He's got it marked at £600 but said you could have it for £400 if your interested. He said you would be better off going to one of the guys online who specialise in that sort of thing for the carts as nobody in our area is going to buy them in a big enough amount to be able to sell them at a decent price but everybody will tell you they can.

All the best Nick
