apache
I have gone for a .22 semi auto and .17hmr I am filling forms out what do I put in the wanted boxes also wanted ammo please I thought you wanted to shoot fox? If you do I'd put in for a cf calibre too. Even if you ask for a .223 you can do a free 1 for 1 variation for a different calibre later. You will buy more rifles! No need to specify action on the application. I would suggest a bolt action .22, the semis are less accurate and less reliable. If I was you I'd put in for .22RF .17HMR .22 FAC Air .22-250 all with a moderator. You can always swap one for another for free, and it will cost you £26 EACH TIME you add a gun. A FAC air is a formality and gives you two extra slots.

apache
Ok mate thanks for advice what do I do if I carnt fit them all on the form 😃 LOL I put in for a variation earlier in the year that required more lines that the form allows. I printed a second copy of the page out, cut out the table and added it on to the bottom! The FEO said I could have just written "22-250 & Sound Moderator" on the same line but if you do that make sure they don't miss anything. njc110381
You definately want a small .22 centrefire for Fox. Rimfire isn't up to much on quarry that big. .223 is a good choice.
JDsniper
Ok what is the cheapest setup option out of the 223 or 22-
gaz-loc
223 and 22-250 are much the same price to setup but from what i have seen at my rfd the 223 is cheaper to run

apache
I all about budget as I don't get a lot if spare £££ as she in doors tells me Then make sure you ask for all you want now then you can spend the variation fee on ammo! You only need to fill the slots in the next 5 years!
njc110381
If budget is a real factor buy a reloading kit and just buy a .22lr and a .22 Hornet - forget the HMR. The Hornet is much less potent than the .223 or .22-250 but will still kill a Fox at 200 yards. Home loaded it will cost you 25p per round - the same as the HMR. You will save a few hundred quid by only buying two rifles (remember that's one less scope and one less moderator to buy too) and the loading kit will set you back just over £100. The Hornet will do everything a HMR will do, only better. It won't do all a .223 will but look at it sensibly, do you need it to? All the bigger rounds offer is range and a shot over 200 yards at a Fox under lamp light is something I very rarely want or need to take. I bought a .223 a while back as well as my Hornet and to be completely honest I wish I hadn't! It doesn't offer me anything over the Hornet and I'm seriously considering selling it again! JDsniper
how would you put down .22lr and .22 hornet on the form and would you request a sound mod for the hornet Edited December 19, 2011 by JayDJones
Luckyshot
how would you put down .22lr and .22 hornet on the form and would you request a sound mod for the hornet Just write 22lr 22lr moderator 22 hornet cf moderator
SPARKIE
Stop messing and get .22lr for when you can shoot rabbits close 70 yards and need to be quite .17hmr for the long range rabbits these will take rabbits heads off at 100-150 yrds all day long with minimal meat damage and what ever fox round you desire .223 is a good cheap fox round with plenty of ammo on the market and .22-250 is a faster flatter round but has more recall and more punch to it but the ammo is considerably more expensive unless you are going to reload...... i have .22lr .17hmr and .22-250 and the .17hmr does most of my rabbit control due to it having the longer reach
steve_b_wales
I would just state .22LR and not put down semi-auto. You may change your mind between the time you apply for your licence and the time it get's back to you. Some forces will not allow 22-250 as a first centrefire, because although it comes under the .224 bullet head size, it's more powerfull than a .222/.223. They should'nt do it, but they do. No harm in asking for a 22.250 though. Ammo is reasonable, and you can buy PRVI Partizan for around 55p per bullet. It's accurate and good enough for fox and other vermin. Reloading works out about the same price per round. Good luck with your application and your future shooting.
Cottonseed
Hi all some advice please I am ready to apply for my FAC. I have a new 6 gun deep cabinet got some land. What I want to no is I have just moved my cabinet doI need to inform them What shall I ask for on the application I want to use it for rabbit and fox What quantities of ammo do I ask for And is the game keeper a good person to use as reference Thanks for reading If your cabinet has been approved by the FEO, then moved by you, it will have to be reinspected. JDsniper
It is a new cabinet have gone from a 3 s/g brattonsound. To an infac 8 gun deep cabinet with top locking box. So It will have to be inspected all over again I imagin
Pipmoff
They will want to check your new cabinet as on their records you only have room to store 3 guns and no ammo storage facility. On my initial grant I applied for .22lr, .17hmr & .223 all with their own moderators. I could prove usage for them all & was granted them no problem. I then had to apply fora variation to add the 6.5x55 for deer. If you think you may end up shooting deer in the future & your budget is limited then apply for a .243 instead of the .223 for fox saying it will give you the option to be used on deer in the future.
