Cosd
My last dog passed away with cancer a few ago now when she was 13 years old. The first 8 years of her life I was lucky enough to be able to take her to work with me and therefor spent a lot of time together. After that we had children and my wife was off work and so again she was with someone every day. When my wife went back to work my dog was getting on and wasquite content and happy mooching around at home on her own till the kids were home at 3.30. My wife and girls so want to get a dog, and as much as I would love to, I feel it wouldnt be fair, as it would be home alone till the wife or kids get home around 4.00pm I'm guessing I already know what people will say, but thought I'd put it out there anyway. I'm sure many dogs are left alone during the day. Do I stick to my guns or give in to a wonderful new member to our family. Mrs Sweepy
Do you have dog walkers in your area? What sort of dog you thinking of getting am lucky with my two that I can pop home during the day and let out. We just had a doggy day care center open up in the village best bit is they even have a mini bus . If you would really like to make your ladies happy. Look out or ask around about the dog walkers. It would answer the problem of it being left so long during the day . xxxxxSuzy
fenboy
If you have room in the garden for a run I dont see a problem as long as its getting some daily exercise , or if your worried about leaving it alone a matching pair always look nice
WGD
Dogs are fine in the kennel as long as they are afforded some decent time for training, exercise and socialising. A lone dog in the kennel is not, I admit, my ideal scenario as they do like company but I was in that boat for a short time and the dog was fine. I think any dog in a family environment, even for a limited and controlled period on a daily basis, arguably gets more one to one attention than in a completely kennelled environment where the owner has a large number of dogs. Not that there is anything wrong with that scenario either, if I have dogs in for friends or pups to run on all the dogs are given some time in the house in the evening but not necessarily daily and never all at the one time. They are all kennelled during the day and sleep out at night.
J@mes
My 2 and a half year old lab bitch is on her own for 9 hours a day, and she is no trouble at all. She's shut in the kitchen, most she does is peer in to the washing machine to see if there is anything in there to cuddle and every day without fail she steals a tea towel off the hanger and takes it to her bed. She doesn't chew or wreck anything, she's never been in the bin (we can leave it full of food waste and she doesn't touch it) and she's never been in the cupboards or anything like that. She gets a good walk in the morning (45mins to an hour) which includes plenty of mind and body work for her to keep her entertained and to tire her out. Our neighbours have said they never hear anything from her, and the odd times I have been home early or managed to sneak away during the day she is always fast asleep, legs in the air. We leave the radio on for her, and also stuff a bone full of wet dog biscuits and freeze it the night before, so she has something to keep her occupied for a short time. CharlieT
I have an assortment of farm dogs and gun dogs. Depending what my dog needs are on a particular day some of them will inevitably have to spend the day in their kennel. If they are not working they are in the kennel and get let out some exercise once a day. Compared to this it seems to me that you are able to give a dog a five star lifestyle. Go for it, I can assure you the dog will be both healthy and happy and your family certainly will.

ferguson_tom
I was in the same predicament this time beginning of the year, we now have one of the happiest dogs I know. I have a welsh collie so a clever and active dog, i take him out in the mornings for half hour obedience training and retrieving in the garden (even in the pitch black) He is then at home for 9 hours and has never damaged anything except for when he was very little, we sometimes have a neighbour who likes to take him out and then i get home at 6 and take him for an hour long walk and more training. As for getting him a companion we thought about this but was told by our trainer it is not necessary as he is now used to being home a lone and eventually dogs get bored with each other. I would say go for it
arwen3513
most dogs soon learn the quiet times, and will settle down after a run in the mornings. any shooters dog has an active lifestyle and can be out working all day, nearly as often as being at home all day, a pup will require more time and someone to visit easy if you have family close by that can pop in or professionals to visit /walk the pup is a good solution. but as he grows he will settle to your lifestyle. jan
