smilersmiff
I am toying with the idea of getting a Springer pup to train and take rough shooting but have hit abit of a snag. My partner and I already have a 3yr old Parsons Terrier that is just a house pet and Im afraid it has been spoilt rotten mainly by the other half. Our main concern is that of the Parsons excepting another dog into the house, my partner thinks rightly or wrongly that it may attack any other dog brought into the house as it is very possesive about us. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.
One man and his lab
It depends really, if you intend on keeping the pup in a kennel outside and well away from the wife :-) then it should be fine. I'd never bring another dog in unless you first have the other properly squared away. Maybe take the dog and wife down the local Gundog trainer and see how he reacts when their are a lot of dogs around and a true professional should be able to assess whether or not he will be okay with another dog around. Hope this helps.

smilersmiff
At what age could I start to keep a pup outside ? I have a large shed that could be used. Do the majority of working dogs live outside ? The wife is so soft she would probably let it in !!!

Me personally have always had working dogs outside but some people have them inside, they might be ok with one another its hard to say but take it slowly and go from there, as for age some people put them outside at 12 weeks some alot later if you already have dogs and put a puppy ouside its much easier than a dog on its own :good:
kent
Most dogs will readilly except another member of the pack in as a pup, but the intoduction is critically important. also Consider the gender of either animal carefully. I believe working dogs should spend the majority of thier time outdoors to do otherwise is unfair on thier constitution. However take care dogs can take badly against an upside down pecking order (lower ranking dog in the house, lower ranking dog going walks on own with the boss etc)i say this as you mentioned the terrier is spoiled
oscarsdad
If you wait until Friday I will let you know from first hand experience as I pick up my new 8 week cocker pup and introduce him to my existing border terrier (who my mrs spoils!). I am confident there will be no issues but will let you know! Anthony
ziplex
We have three springers and a GSP, the youngest springer and the GSP work whereas the other two springers don't. They all live indoors without a single problem. Obviously there is a pecking order at feed times etc but generally ours get along fine, it's quite usual for 3 of them to be crashed out asleep together in a heap. The eldest (and smallest) springer is the matriarch and will occasionally put the young springer and pointer in their place if they're larking around too much/overstep the mark...which can be quite comical at times (but effective) We have always introduced new dogs quietly and without fuss and they seem to enjoy each others company in no time...if the springer was introduced at a young age I can't see you having any problems at all, they'll be the best of buddies in no time. The only issue we do get is when the eldest springer is in season, she seems to get quite short tempered and not too tolerant of the others. The terrier is a 3 year old male and he has been castrated so if we were to get another dog should we be looking at a dog or bitch ?

oscarsdad
Pup will be kept inside and the existing terrier is a 2 year old intact male. Worst thing that may happen is the terrier will sulk for a bit but I am sure he will get on with the pup straight away as he was introduced to my mrs' mum's pup at 7wks and they are best of friends. I will update you tomorrow evening! Anthony
oscarsdad
Right....an update. Jet has been home for 2 hours now and has just curled up to go to sleep. Oscar is sat on my knee. If anything the pup is too brave as the first thing he did was jump on Oscar! Osc is a little unsure what is going on but he is tolerating the pup and has played with him as well. I am sure when they get settled and jet realises the terrier is top dog then they will be best of friends! My mrs will be home soon so I can have a rest! Good luck if you go for it! ferguson_tom
I was told by someone who knows more than me that a bitch will fight to literally the death where as a dog knows when to give up. It was suggested if we get another dog to go for another castrated male. Good to here everything is going well anthony, I am sure it wont take long for Jet to try and take the top dog role when he gets a bit bigger
Fatcatsplat
We have four dogs - 15 yr old staff, 6 yr old boxer and a clumber aged 2 - all bitches. all was well until we got a clumber cross back in the summer - staff and the boxer think she's great, but the 2 yr old clumber hated her with a vengeance and saw her as competition. Fast forward a few months and we still get maybe a once a week tear up between them, but it's getting better and she is tolerating the pup more now - Think it's just a case of them working out the pecking order between them and then you as owner attempting impartiality.
