Fox/Squirrel hunting.

Well after long day hunting at Nicks place yesteday, I was in no state for an early 5pm start today.

So it was up at 9, shove a bit of leftovers in me, and off for the field. Great weather today!

I had inteded to hit the zero range for a bit of practice, but I noticed a very high squirrel population in the top of the woods. I couldnt help but pop in to see what all the squirrels were up to, fussing around making their squibbling noises. The first, much like the rest, was clung to the base of a tree, with a good backstop of 2 foot of solid beach wood  he took a nicley placed hollow point Winchester Laser copper coated bullet, and lay to rest on the same spot he was shot. This continued for some time, and my total back ended with 5 squirrels, 4 of them being male. Still more work to be done, but this is very limmited and hard work with a scoped bolt action rifle.

After this, I hit the 70meter zero range, sighted in the gun with the ammo for longer range work, and began heading back home.

Near my hidden gun box in the woods was a fox chewing on something. Bolt closed, quick look around to check for safety, rifle up, and bang. Shot free hand at 50yards through the inside of the ear. This is were I try to put all my shots as it is 100% effective every time. Fox simply dropped on its belly without a twitch. On closer inspection, it apeared to be quite healthy, I would estimate around 1-1/2 years old. On closer inspection it apeared to have been eating some kind of snake, which was still alive, and had to be put down due to gashes from the fox's teeth. Pitty I was just a minute late, as it looked like an interesting animal.

My long shooting club practice sessions have really paid off for my free hand shots with the Sako. I had a couple of rabbits shot free hand around 60 yards when out yesterday. I highly recommend club practice to all feild shooters

I then got the beast into a bin bag ready for disposal. It was pretty darn heavy!

I aggree. Its the most healthy looking fox I have shot/sen up close.

Thanks for your replies, I was unsure when I called myself hunter as I did not see this comming (FAC etc) so really its everyone here that helped me get to this stage.

I was looking for some gun parts a while ago, and I hit 'UK shooting Forums' into google, this was the third link I tried and ended up sighning up a week later. Then I was tempted into FAC..

A good friend of mine is now looking after it, as he has a rabbit problem in his garden. I also got him into shooting, and it was his first fairly decent airgun, as I had dontated one previously, but this is better.

Hopefully it will get him a few bunnies

Must go on a hunt with Frank sometime.. could be interesting

Dont worry, so far its Noobs luck. Im pretty sure I wont get anything for a bit now, though I will give the air rifle a go at the squirrels now that they are busy in the tree tops

I do this every year, and it really is the best sport. You have to listen hard, and use your eyes to spot any movement. Then carefully get underneath, and shoot a usually free hand shot up into the tree and wait for squizzer to come crashing down. These hunts can go on all week during holidays here, and I often camp out with a tent in the field to make an early start.
