dunganick
Okay, i hate to drag this one up, but i need some first hand experiance from some of you chaps. Right after zeroing with Hunter on friday i got mighty anoyed with the paralax error on my hawke. So ive decided i will try to fund a new scope. I am looking at importing from states as you save money (not alot.... but every little counts) so my budget is about $200 (excluding P+P) It must have 9x Mag at least, i would preffer a milldot or some sort of reticle like that, and it must have a 40mm or larger objective lense. It is for a .22lr and i cant afford a meopta or schmidt at the moment, i just dont have the money, so save the lectures about buy cheap and buy twice here is one site: http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/brows...1397***15275*** So in my position what scope would you get? i have been looking at the leupold vx-1 3-9x40 with duplex reticle and also the Weaver Classic V-Series Scope 3-9x 50mm Dual-X Reticle Matte. Does anyone have any first hand experiance with these scopes? sorry about asking such a common question, i know it has been covered at length before, but we have some new faces on the forum so would like their opinions as well. mry716
May I add my Pennies worth? You do realise that anything over $100 dollars bought from a US dealer now needs an Export licence to exit the US? But besides that, buying a scope from the US has a greater risk factor than buying in the UK as is buying anything abroad. Firstly it may be damaged in transit and from experience I know how difficult it can be dealing with a return and repair/replacement if only because of UK Customs who now demand you pay duty on the replacement as well and then reclaim it afterwards. (It took me hours of letter writing and 5 months to get a 90% refund - the exchange rate had changed in the meanwhile). Secondly, buying at US prices is fine if you can actually get them at these prices. I buy a lot of things form our Colonial Cousins and some come through ok - no duty Vat etc but MOST (99%) from companies will attract the attention of the HM Customs & Excise. So a $210 scope as quoted by Kdubya will probably cost you as follows:- $210 + shipping $20 UPS uninsured (stupid) $40 UPS insured (sensible) = total $250. Take present exchange rate at US $1.80 to the UK £ = £138 plus duty at 5% = £146 plus VAT at 17.5% = £171 plus the charge the carrier makes for dealing with UK customs. If UPS (usual for this type of item) about £14 for this type of value. So total cost to you in your hand is now £185. Check the Sportsman's prices and decide if the risks of transit damage and/or loss are worthwhile! £181 Now if you are ok taking these sort of risks why not go just one stage further and buy on Ebay. Talk to the seller first - be polite and ask if he/she minds you bidding and explain in an email (Do NOT use EBay's facility) what you want. A surprising amount of folk selling these items are also shooters and will really put themselves out for you. Try it and see I am sure you will be most surprised at the results. I use Ebay sellers quite a lot nowadays - not necessarily buying what they have for sale on the Ebay site but often asking them to get me something as a one-off. This is esp. true for brass and dies etc which I can buy at half the UK price and get them here within a week.
kdubya
And I will add my two penneth? I have bought a bushnell elite 4200 4x 16x 50 total cost to ME £261!! try getting one for that over here off the rip off merchants that masquerade as "good guys" that included $35 dollars post about what £18?ish and £12.50 parcel farce handling charge, this was sent insured and I was given a tracking number, I liked the deal so much and the SERVICE I bought a legend straight after, this time it was uninsured (yes my chance but I felt easy about the vendor) it arrived again within a week no probs however this time it cost £13.50 parcel force handling charge? again NO duty NO vat, as to warranty probs should it go wrong ( I have no reason whatsover to assume they will, goods were in first class brand new order) then like it or not a main uk agent has a duty to deal with any complaint? oh and dont quote "grey imports " as this is nothing but a red herring like it or not they are obligated by the manufactures and like it or not if I only saved £50 on say a leupold 3x9x40 it would be worth it if I thought some of the rip off merchants where not getting my dosh I work BLOODY hard for cheers KW
Axe
Nick, I know i've said it a million times but have a look at the Nikko Stirling Nighteaters, they really are very good. One peice tube design in 25 or 30mm, built in sun shade, clear glass, fine recticles, mil-dots, etc. Pop down to Andersons they stock a good range of them. It won't cost you a penny to have a look at them and you might be pleasently surprised. Optics Warehouse does them at great prices.

Graham M
Nick I have a Weaver Classic 3-9X50 and it really is a good scope. Can't believe how much I was ripped off over here with the price though, over 200% more expensive. G.M. (formerly Gemini)

reefman
I bought a Leupold VX11 3-9 x40 from Wilderness Spotrs last year(on Ebay) for £124 inc postage and insurance.I didn't get hit for import tax as it was marked as a gift. That is £100 less than uk price It's still sat in it's box waiting for my new rifle to wear it. I also bought a FX111 6x42 m8 Leupold from Ebay,I paid £120 for it but with postage it is as new but was used, sadly I got nobbed for £26 import tax it came to about £160. Still a bargain. is a fantastic scope and sits on my Marlin .22 rimmy I don't think midway will entertain mail order to the uk,I had a look at their site a while ago. Chuck Hawkes has a good website all about rimfire scopes. He realy rates both leupold and sightron scopes. Have a look on the USA Ebay sites,I am completly confident, pay with paypal and take out insurance, the trick is to know what you want in the first place. Reefman. Graham M
(formerly Gemini) Graham, did Gemini get banned or what? Not banned, just had a snotty PM telling me off about using synonyms in place of swear words. I deleted my info in my profile and then wasn’t able to get back on in that name so sent a PM to teal asking if I had been banned. Didn’t receive any reply so just carried on and re-registered. I must admit I was very annoyed about it because I have never used bad language on this site, and have seen much worse on here that hasn’t been commented on let alone deleted. Anyway, I will post as and when I can and will see how things go. Shame really because this is quite a good site, and really doesn’t need to be moderated too much as most of the users are pretty much nice enough people. G.M.
