henry d
No I disagree with you Paul, you called the cartridges rubbish and that the fox was hit at 20yds in the chest head and side, yet all the learned advice of many many years of shooting is telling you that you either didn`t hit it where you said or that it was further than 20yds, try to sum it up for yourself. mpk
At the end of the day a no wot a shot a ask for advice n ya just get the pea taking out of ya how can this be advice I think you have all the advice you need, either a poor cartridge or poor shot. Either close the range down, shoot it in a different place or use a better cartridge. Only you can analyse were it went wrong as you were there. You emptied 3 rounds into it between the 2 of you so something obviously didnt work. Giving people abuse won't help you in getting advice. Nobody has been rude to you. Most of the malicious comments have come from your end mate My advice would be close the range down, use something like bb's and shoot it further forward ( chest/head) this should improve your kill ratio !! GOOD LUCK
Tomm
i use 36g bb and iv shot foxes at 30 yards and dropped then with one shot. like others have said you cant have hit the vitals, 28g 5 is a very light load and is not much good for much more than pigeons imo, most foxes are shot with 32g 6 as its what most people have in the gun when out in the field, Tom
Mike525steel
I've seen a few killed with standard bird shot on driven days over the last 20 yards and at sort range they drop like stones
Browning 425 clay hunter
Try throwing the carts at it, sounds like it would be a more humane way of disposing of it.
Katzenjammer
I have just read this thread and frankly cannot believe what I am reading let alone understand or interpret it on occasions! A simple question "what cartridge is recommended for shooting foxes" would have sufficed and would have evinced a suitable reply. However what the OP has done is shown what poor research he has undertaken into this subject as google or an RFD would have provided the answer before he even went out hunting! Instead we learn on a public forum that the animal has been wounded or maimed with incorrect calibre/shot size and may die a festering painful death. Even pests and vermin merit quick and humane despatch! And there is a confession to leaving a rifle in a vehicle - I trust the bolt and magazine etc were separate and hidden? What it has done is provide possible ammunition for the anti-gun lobby, law enforcement organisations and the animal welfare brigade? It shows why more stringent examination and licensing procedures are called for by some to ensure that the right people get licences. Those who have researched, learnt and been trained etc and subject to proper and searching examination orally and written! Finally, given what has happened in the Durham Police area in the past week, I am sure a tightening up will happen in the County and and examples sought and they may feel here is one confessed person who needs checking out and tightening up or even licences rescinded? Nothing wrong or illegal with leaving a rifle in your vehicle whilst out shooting. I leave atleast one rifle in my Defender on regular occasions, you can't carry 1 rifle whilst shooting with another. Obviously I take the bolt with me but that is it and my FLM is fine with this. Edited January 8, 2012 by Luckyshot
