Frenchieboy
Well, I have been climbing the walls for the last few days because of the constant rainy weather we have had in our area. This morning didn't look any better so I just sat and hoped. The rain seemed to be easing off a little so that was it - I got changed and prepared the Mossberg and a belt of Clear Pigeon 30g 6 shot cartridges, loaded everything into the car and I was away! Got to the farm and had a quick chat to the owner (Who said I must be mad - Possibly quite true!!!!) as by the time we had finished chatting over a cup of tea it was peeing down again! I sat in the car for about 15 minutes as I could see that the sky was getting a bit lighter and eventually it (almost) stopped raining so that was it, out of the car, game bag on shoulder, cartridge belt on and Mossberg out of the slip and loaded. I headed down to the woods which cover about 6 acres in the hope of a few magpies, crows or wood pigeons to start the year off. Low and behold what was the first thing I came across - a nice Roe Buck and 2 Does about 50 yards away from me totally oblivious to my presence! Bl**dy typical I thought, if only I had brought the .243 instead of the shotgun I could have nailed my first roe of the year, but not to worry, it was a pleasure just to stand there and watch them for a minute or so. I was so content just watching them I almost missed 2 magpies heading my way! You will note that I said ALMOST missed spotting them! I managed to raise the gun in time (Frightening off the Roe Deer) slipped the safety catch and BANG BANG - 2 very dead maggies hit the extremely wet ground with a bit of a splash! Nothing else presented itself in range but I was more than happy to returned home soaking wet with the satisfaction that I had "blown the cobwebs away" and notched up my first kills of the year - Not a "big bag" by any standards but good enough to cure my "grumpiness"! Now it time for a nice large glass of port and to put my feet up while waiting for my Roast Pork Dinner after "Dearly Beloved" has put all of my soaking wet shooting clothes into the tumble drier! Good luck to all of you that went out for a shot today, I hope you managed to stay reasonably dry and enjoyed yourself as much as I have done. Have a great 2012! Spring has sprung here in NI today - the best weather in ages - would that it might last at least for tomorrow as I am going shooting....
