MC
From what I have been told that if the dogs ear smell then it is a sign of infection. My spaniel gets wax in his ears (so do I) but it doesn't smell. I clean them form time to time with baby wipes. I would get your Vets opinion Cheers Martin
new to the flock
If the browm wax has a smell of old cheese or smelly socks, then your dog has an ear mite infection. The absolute best product which I have used to 100% clear up this problem in cronic dogs is Thornit Ear Powder. It is made right in England, and works a treat. Fisherman Mike
Does he keep shaking his head.? Probably ear canker, very common in the gun dog breeds especially spaniels, the underlying cause may be ear mites as NTTF suggests in which case an insecticide based medication will be required. If its a chronic condition such as Otitis externa it may be difficult to cure completely without surgery to the ear canal. It could be due bacterial infection or obstruction and build up of debris with grass seeds being one of the commonest causes in which case the canal may require to be irregated and cleaned under a local anesthetic. I would be tempted to get a second opinion from another vet. particularly as I lost a damn good dog once with a abcess from an imbedded grass seed, which turned into a blood disorder. FM. darren m
cheers Dan & Mike -- its in both ears , and as been since he was a pup. i,ve ask the vet twice now on seperate visits and he,s had a look , but says there ok think i will , treat it as mites first then see if it comes back , then get a second opinion. Yes sounds like canker to me, as a kid we had dalmations and they were prone to it too, it does calm down a lot with treatment but never went away, i too would go for a second opinion, its not worth loosing a dog over.
