To Shoot or Not To Shoot

It's great that the cold weather is finally here and the birds are on the rape at last but it always raises the question. As you drive round and find the birds sitting in trees waiting for the frost to by burnt off the rape by the sun, you are not sure that they will stay on that field as no birds are joining? So you make a decision and set up on the chosen field walking the birds off as you set up. Will they return? yes they do in groups of between ten and fifteen so do you shoot two and scare the rest or do you let them spook on the pattern and hope they come back in smaller numbers?

This weekend and today we shot on three different farms and this happened to us all the time. We take it in turns to shoot so I can shoot two and DB three . We decided to let the flock come in spook and then hit the back end as they go away the results being 52,56 and 62. We are going to try and hit them coming in next week.

great pics mate and some good shooting on the rape!

we normally all ways leave the big flocks to spook or flyover and shoot the ones that return,if they keep coming over we take the lower ones from the back afer the birds have spooked-this seems to work the best for us. Never shoot at a massive flock otherwise ive found they never come back.

They're so bloody finicky on the rape sometimes aint they!

good luck

Interesting experiment.

Some thoughts, possibly wrong.

If you shoot the first birds arriving the rest will be scared off by your movement and the noise. They may not even see your decoys, possibly just following the lead birds.

If you shoot the last birds, the first birds will already have seen your decoys and been spooked by them, then have that spook reinforced by your movement and the noise.

Is it possible that the second group will be more wary of your decoys next time ?

Just a thought.

like i said i never shoot the first birds out of a flock-i mean if theres 5-10 ill go for the pair but bigger flocks we leave,i have shot the last birds numerous times and had 'silly' birds circle and come back in, most of these admittedly are young'uns but i have had old pifeons do it aswell, ive never really noticed pigeons spooking from decoys before, the magnet maybe, but not just the bird, ive had them land many times-like evryone else. most of the time ive had pigeons spook is either by seeing movement,or and upturned dead bird. it is definitley food for thought though...
