welsh1
In all the years i have been shooting,i have never fired an o/u,so yesterday i bought a second hand midland o/u,nothing flash but in a nice condition. So i got up early this morning and went out for an hour,it rained, there was hail, but there were no pigeons so i came home and had some breakfast,my mate called at 10 and off we went out again, first farm, nothing flying, and mate falls in the mud and slurry, good job he managed to raise my hatsan so only the stock was covered in mud So after hosing him down i had the bright idea to go to a nice wood in a cut,and off we go,as we pull in to the lane there are a lot of horse boxes, and i get a sinking feeling,i chat to a bloke climbing over a gate, and he tells me the hunt are turning my permission into the Somme, with an unscheduled day out So went to another farm and as we walk about my mate is struggling, hurt knee and elbow from the fall, still no pigeons,we decide to call it a day. Because we are close to a beach cove i said i would take the dog down there instead of hosing him down later,i didn't realise the tide was nearly a quarter of a mile out, long walk So back home, dog dried, hatsan stripped, cleaned and oiled and put away, but i still haven't fired an o/u. Back out to a small copse on another farm, left the dog at home all clean and sleeping. I walk into the copse and two pigeons leg it,two shots, two misses ,so now i have actually fired an o/u. 20 minutes later a pigeon came in saw me and was off,35-40yds and down he came my first pigeon with an o/u. About to send the dog in,oh hold on i left him sleeping,so into the brambles and after 5 minutes can see the pigeon but as usual it's in the centre of a thicket of brambles,i eventually get hold of the tail and pull,a hand full of tail feathers,so in i go again, and finally recover my first ever pigeon with an o/u I have to say the gun felt great and very well balanced,it came up nicely and felt spot on,so i think this may be a keeper. And i am no longer an o/u virgin. HDAV
I had one of those Midlands for a while (actually a Sabatti?) the same gun comes in different guises and the action is quite distinctive very solid with the cross bolt!
