How to remove rust specs

Cleaning down my rifle noticed tiny lil specs of rust colour on certain areas :o

I tried scrubbing down the area's with an oily rag and such but they didn't really remove them.

I always give the rifle a rub down with oily rag after use, what can I use to give it a good scrub to remove anything like this ? I don't want to use anything that will scratch up the finish  Its a blued rifle on wooden stock :good:

cheers

Hiya, When i'm rebluing any guns, I give it a good rub down with wire wool to remove the rust specks......use the fine stuff, it doesnt mark the gun at all...:)

Do I need to reblue it mate  Or just give it a good rub down with some wire wool and some gun cleaner then a bit of oil ? :hmm:

Hiya, I suppose it all depends on how bad it is...if once you get rid of the spots, there are big areas, then i'd personally reblue the barrels, but if it's just tiny little bits, then a good wipe with cleaner and oil should hold it at bay, and give it a wipe over every time yer out with the gun......:)

I really need to get my own one done too, not been done for ages...:)

Why not just use Hydrocloric acid (rust remover) to the spots

Just be careful and it eat's the rust and leavs a protective layer on top just use a tiny spot

As for wire wool on a gun, it can cause a lot of wear when tiny bits fall off and go into small area's like ejectors, machined parts and trigger box, and is the first thing to start to rust if damp ok for wooden parts if removed from metal, but never on whole gun

Wrong on so many levels

Hydrochloric acid will remove bluing in a heartbeat, we use a tank of it to strip the old finish off barrels prior to blacking, to give you an idea a brand new browning shotgun barrel will be completely clean of bluing in less than 3 seconds and thats a very weak solution so as not to etch the steel

Unless you are planning a full reblqck then its a really really bad idea
