hedd-wyn
Here's one for you lads/ladies who are on a budget and want a decent, reliable wax jacket for the field. As we all know this shooting business doesn't come cheap especially if you're starting out. But for those of you who prefer an old school reliable wax jacket and can't afford a Barbour, or don't wan to risk snagging your £300 jacket on a barbed wire fence whilst rough shooting... Here's what I do. You can buy a cheap jacket off fleabay. Mine cost £20, and a tin of wax, cost me £7-00, I bought Barbour wax, but Im sure there are cheaper alternatives. Lay the jacket by the fire so that it softness the wax. Then rub the tin of wax melted clear in a pan of boiling water with an old rag or cloth into the jacket all over, making sure you cover all the seams. Once done leave to cool and dry. Absolutely champion quality lads! Just make sure the ******* dog doesn't lay on it when you're outside having a fag, the hairs will never come out, but for under £30 who can complain. hedd-wyn
Hopefully this can save my old wax jacket and save me from buying and altering a new one! My father in law taught me how to do this, he's had the same jacket for years... when it's all done it's surprisingly satisfying

woodcock1
Only on a cold day the wax goes hard and you cant bend your arms.
Rick.huggins
I recently re-waxed my Beaufort after 11yrs wear and all I can say is I'm not looking forward to doing it again in another 11yrs; I think I'll be sending it back to Barbour! It took about 4hrs solid graft to do it properly; but I was very pleased with the outcome (not the blisters)
Alpha Mule
I used to have a waxed cotton jacket for wearing on my motorbike. After a while the wax sets in the position you maintain the most. When I took it off it could stand on its own and looked like it belonged to a zombie One thing I found helped when rewaxing (or 'topping up'): blast it with a hot hair drier to soften and re-settle the wax. Scully
I do something similar by hanging mine from the door on a coat hangar, and then after applying the melted wax I go over it with a hair dryer set on hot,so it melts into all the seams. Much cheaper than sending it back to Barbour.
